When it comes to mass start racing. A sprint workout HAS to be a consistent part of your program if you want to have any success. |

If you are referring to today, then I think the mental aspect was more important than the physical aspect.

I have to disagree. I think that Cancellara knew from his second place in MSR in a small pack sprint that if he was in a small group and the end of Flanders, he would be able to take it. Ironically, it was watching the first Olymipc triathlon that it really sunk in for me. The guy who won gave an interview and was asked what made the difference and he said it was his sprint workouts (in the run phase in this case). He knew that if it came down to a sprint, he could outsprint the competition. I never forgot that. |

By that token, Sep Vanmarcke did an impressive sprint at Gent and theoretically he's the faster finisher of the two. Cance got the upper hand when the other Sep took a flyer and Cance made Vanmarcke close the gap. That's the second time, after P-R last year, Vanmarcke 's gonna get a Cancellara complex. Not saying a sprint workout isn't important (d'uh) but its wits and experience that won the race. You can't win if you don't keep your cool.

He pulled away from them when he went. It was impressive. His jump didn't get him clear but his power was to much for anyone to come around him. Best they got was a draft. |

Nobody came off anybodies wheel in that sprint. It was a straight up "what do you have" affair. My larger point is that Cancellara had confidence in his sprint because of his finish in MSR. As it pertains to the rest of us…unless you have the horses to ride everyone off your wheel every time (something not even Cance can do as we have seen today), your sprint game better be in order. |

260k and all those leg breaker hills probably took more out of the other guys than Spartacus, too - and he knew that.
Geezer retro alert, but a propos to this thread: When asked about his ability to win from breakaways when he was the top domestic American in the 70's, John Howard downplayed his sprint. "There aren't too many sprinters around after a 100 mile hilly roadrace."

As one coach said, "would you rather take your chance sprinting against 4 guys or 40?" |

Fabian has always had a good sprint....at the end of a long, hard classic, that is. His sprint is well-suited to his type of riding / strengths. I haven't been doing any shirt, high-intensity efforts this year.....first ride outside today at home and when it came time for the finishing sprint, I got waxed....even though I was one of the strongest guys on our ride today. |

CK, I am just the opposite. The first thing I work on is sprints. |

Yeah, but I'm training for stuff where I have zero need for explosive power / speed. So I don't train it.... If I was still racing on the road, I would be doing some short, super-high intensity efforts. My max wattage today on one effort was like 756w....and it was a spike. |

every cyclist is a little different, if you're smart wins will come. Work on what you're good at. bike handling, endurance, climbing ability and opportunism all come into play. Nothing like seeing all the long faced sprinters when someone slips away in a sketchy crit turn and softpedals 2 turns to victory

LOL...went back and looked at my data a bit more. So my "max" wattage was 768... my "peak" 10 sec wattage incorporated this "peak" and was only 591w. Glad I'm not bike racing right now....I suck!!! LOL!!! |

On the Velonews website today is an article on Cancellara's training prior to Flanders. Seems he's been reading Keith's mind. http://velonews.competitor.com/2014/04/news/sprint-jinx-cancellara-flanders_323020 Or he (and Trek) have been following C.K. and finally getting the aero thing down. He's benefiting from the watts saved.
