http://www.livescience.com/49667-jogging-lifespan.html I read the original study from over a year ago and they make the correlation with intensity in cycling also. After a lifetime of "interval" and "intensity" training, I have had my share of issues that have forced me to a low intensity fitness lifestyle - not sure if I will be able to get back to those hard days, not sure I want to since I am now looking at trying to make my remaining decades healthy ones. I do love chasing rabbits though ; )

i've been hitting spin class pretty regular this winter. usually twice a week with a rest day in between. i get out on the bike once on the weekend. i hit spin class hard both times but it really pays off when it comes to riding. last week i did an erg class on my rest day. good lord that was hard and probably not in a good way. i bet it shortened my life by a few hours. i could see that level of intensity not being good for me in the long run. i felt odd the rest of the evening and into the next day. probably all the bacon fat getting dislodged from my arteries.
How we spend our days is, of course, how we spend our lives.

If I must die from cycling too much it will probably be this summer on one of the 20-odd cols of the Haute Route Alps. As my friends keep telling me "you signed up for this voluntary?!?"

I'm 72, when riders pass me they think I'm riding backwards....
