I gather from many of my previous med questions, that several of you are on blood thinners... What precautions do I need to take while riding outdoors when I do start taking them? Thanks again!

Get a RoadID that lists your meds on it....and really you should wear it all the time. I have the silicone band style and it is always on me. if you are riding with people, make sure they know you are on thinners.

Past that, just don't fall down.

I used to think the main concern was bleeding out due to a severe crash....but the real issue is a head knock which could lead to a brain bleed.

Ditto on what CK said about road ID. I list all my meds. I use the same wristband. About blood thinners. I take low dose aspirin (81MG) along with prescription meds for high blood pressure/heart condition. I had an appointment with my dental hygienist a couple months ago. She noted I had bleeding gums. I was referred to a periodontist, which was a 80 mile round trip. I also had puss coming from the same location where I had dental implants. I did not see my dentist as he was out of the office. I searched online how to treat treat gum infections at home, rinse with warm salt water for 30 seconds twice a day. Saw periodontist ( 3weeks later). Gum infection gone. Reason for bleeding gums, aspirin. Some meds can cause dental hygiene problems. Keep on top of your dental hygiene. With all the problems with my teeth over the years I could have bought a boat load of Colnagos.

This is especially important for us as athletes...we tend to eat and drink a bunch of sugary stuff that ain't great for our teeth. Chews, energy drinks, etc are not kind to your teeth.

^ This, but it sort of comes with the territory so buy the best helmet you can get.

+3 or however many we're up to on Road ID.

Easy and excessive bleeding is part of life if you're on anticoagulants. I keep Bandaids everywhere to prevent looking like a crime scene if I nick myself shaving or catch a thorn to the leg on a hike. Minor annoyance but... well, minor. As CK said it's the brain bleed that's worrisome.

Lastly, no downhill mbt races and Cat 4 crits are contraindicated.

Huck, Road ID $10 off coupon (the rest of you clowns listen up, it's a one time use code. Don't be grabbing it).

Dale,
Where did the discount code come from? Instead of stealing the one for Huck, maybe we could get our own.

I clicked on Road ID site Looks like they raised the price considerably over the years. About twice what I paid for mine originally.

Smokey I bought a new ID and they included a one time use code to pass along. Sorry, they just sent the one.

Thanks Dale. That was very generous of you.

I looked at the prices and was a little shocked. Since I am only going to be on blood thinners for 3 months, perhaps you can give it to someone else who would need one much longer.

I figure if I go for an outdoor ride in those three winter months I will write my med warnings on a piece of white duct tape and put it on the backside of my glove.

Huck - Do you bring your phone with you on rides? You can have your medical issues and medications listed on your home/lock screen. I believe EMTs are trained to look for person's phone first for emergency contacts and medical issues.

Not that I use it but my iPhone has an App to store critical health info. Just put a piece of tape on phone’s back to check that info. Additionally our drivers license doubles as health ID. So any paramedic checking wallet should have direct access to critical health info.

Ha, I missed 6ix post, seems we were typing very similar thoughts simultaneously. Brilliant minds. It seems this place is devolving from a cycling forum to a health forum. Quick, where can I preorder my walking cane?
