Sorry for the hyperbole but I been riding hard for four months and now I'm tired. Taking a week off to shake this bone-weary fatigue. Damn stupid bicycle. Why must you be such a beautiful yet blood-sucking energy vampire? |

I only start to hate the bike if I don't have a race every few weeks. I have also had "why the F do I do this" days when I'm racing poorly or when the weather is bad and I "have" to be out training in it. |

Well tonight I got on my tri bike in a tri suit (minimal pockets) and 10 miles from home, I hit a pothole the size of a watermelon and promptly pinch flatted and tore the tire sidewall. I looked around for some wrapper of some sort to boot the tire and could only find one of those little flags that survey crews plant in the dirt to mark a gas line and ripped a piece of that, booted the tire and took the only spare tube I had and inflated it with my co2 cartridge all proud of myself for being so McGyver-y. Then the tube blew up. I had not seated it correctly. Now I'm getting pissed, the weather is starting to turn stormy and I'm being stung by horse flies, I'm out of tubes and I don't even have a patch kit. Some guy rides by and sees me standing there scratching my head and asks me if I "need anything", so I say "hell yeah, do you have a tube?" he turns around and hands me one of his spares (he said he always carries two). I say "Vielen dank" (he was German), fix my flat with my second CO2 cartridge and get on my way home hoping not to flat. I kind of hated the sport of cycling for the 15-20 minutes that I was dealing with this mechanical. You get none of this stuff when you just swim or run, but then there's not much karma either. |

Because I run at least a couple of times a week, the bike usually seems like a new fresh adventure. |

When you are not getting enough recovery time it is often manifest in grumpiness. The week off will help you meet that part of your fitness plan and goals plus give you some time to do some maintenance. Repack your bearings, clean your chain and pick the glass bits out of your tires. Wax your frame and put on new handlebar tape. Change your shifter cables and brake cables. replace your brake pads, Go for a 3 Km recovery walk in the middle of the week and maybe again on thursday. Go grocery shopping with your wife on the weekend and walk around the store. Maybe have a couple of beers too. After you have diligently chase your recovery shortage you may ride anywhere you like but only 1/2 as far as you normally would. Next ride go as far but 1/2 as fast or take an extra hour to fide the distance. You have to take 2 days off this week and tomorrow is a good day for a rest. If you are missing the bike by now you are probably caught up on recovery time. Start where you left off the last time you enjoyed a training ride and see where your strength is. I'll bet you got stronger and fresher. |

words of wisdom, Master50, thank you. that's exactly what i did this week. off since last Sunday to Thursday. caught up on rest and work, and set things up better with the wife. easy rides yesterday and today, 3 hours total. still feeling some residual fatigue but not near as much as before. big group ride Saturday morning will tell whether the break results in "stronger and faster." hope so!

I get tired sometimes. No rhyme or reason. Sometimes I go through periods of tiredness and fatigue, then everything comes back. Maybe you just need to get off the bike for a week or so. I don't hate my bike, but I hate my worn out old body. I think the day might come when I can't ride anymore. And when that day comes I will cry like a baby. |

never hate the bikes, but lately I have been kind of burnt out, WAY too many guides, and way too many miles it seems, legs are feeling heavy, but I think alot of it is due to my wife's hip replacement, been pulling double duty lately, work and home, I'm fried. I have been actually looking forward to some winter or cold weather rides soon, helps me re-energize |
