Off-topic but this reminds me my wife broke a plastic piece of her 105 derailleur (sound familiar?) with a silly spill. She is a newbie, I have since given her firm instruction to always protect the bike when crashing and in particular the drivetrain side. I believe the lesson was learned. Unlike you we did not go route of replacing the plastic part with two brand new bikes, instead simply replacing the derailleur. Fast service from LBS, the bike is good again for her first metric century this Friday. I'm really liking these newbie speeds, its the speeds I was meant to ride. They definitely don't require electronic shifting.

Sidebar aside, this announcement probably means that a lot more folks will have to come to financial terms with electronic shifting. The weight/performance penalty of Tiagra as next groupset down is considerable. So far there's only one guy riding with electronic shifting in our club, he's had it for quite a few years and performance wise its great, that aspect is a no brainer. Only the leap in price is.

Not a luddite, but content with my SRAM 10 speed. It's been amazingly durable, but some parts likely are nearing replacement time. So a time to consider options.
Any opinions regarding downside and upside of wireless for a casual rider like me?

I personally still prefer the feel of mechanical, even though my new bike is Ultegra Di2. I am warming up to it, but miss the tactile feel of cables.

Upside - marginally faster shifting, less maintenance, easier to shift, "on trend" with market so easier to get replacement parts

Downsides - have to remember to change batteries, slightly heavier,

Worth it? *shrug* I ended up getting the Ultegra stuff knowing that I was now "up to date" iwth my bike and would not need to consider anything new for 3-5 years and parts would be plentiful.
