Because they can't have it their way via normal methods and feel the need to resort to this crap. We get it in North Van too. People have been stealing trail markers and pulling sticks on to trails or sometimes worse with larger logs pulled into blind corners or drops. There are a few folks that don't feel that mountain bikes belong in the woods and need to be contained in some fashion like at the Whistler bike park. Certain citizens send e-mails almost daily to the City and District politicians and have been for years. Riding brings money to the North Shore as riders spend money at the shops, buy lunch and coffee etc. Therefore the nay sayers are not getting their way and sometimes they resort to booby trapping trails.

Asshats!
I don't remember the exact details because I was about 12 years old, but in the late 70's hunters were trying to keep motos off of their favorite killing zones, logging roads. Someone strung a thin cable across a road to cause motos to crash. As you can guess the cable hit the front tire, flung up and killed a guy. I was a nervous kid for a while when we were riding the dirt roads to get to tracks or hillclimbs.
In addition to advertising well for my LBS sponsor, this is another reason that I am friendly to all trail users. I want them to like mountain bikers, and be glad to share the trail with us.

wow, just read this old post, some people are just nuts out there, and have no idea of the consequences of their actions. Or, like here in Santa Fe, we have a huge population of the "Whole World Evolves Around me Crowd" and they don't know, or think they have to share
A few years ago here in the Placitas area north of of Allbuquerque, some nut job was stringing wires across the trails, luckily no one was killed or hurt
