I read the CN interview with Tinkov. I'm impressed. The guy has a vision for the sport of cycling. Split team revenues into sponsorship AND TV revenue from the races. Make it so that teams aren't under so much pressure to perform just to stay in existence; that this pressure leads teams to look the other way re: PEDs.
He talks of boycotting the Tour & Giro, perhaps with the other teams owned by wealthy men (BMC, Katusha) until the ASO and others agree to share the TV rights.
He talks of his early years. Born in Siberia. Bike racing was his way out. He traveled Russia racing, starting his entrepreneur days buying jeans, WBs etc. in his bike racing travels and reselling them in Siberia. If he is to be believed, he won 40 races. Sounds like his love of bike racing was earned. Also that he is willing to swing his weight around to make changes for the good. Feathers will get ruffled.

Agreed. The reason cycling is a poor sport is because the participants do not directly share in the TV revenue. Unless Cookson brokers a deal, a boycott will be the only way the teams/riders can force the issue on the ASO. The Tour winner gets only 475,000 Euros with the total Tour total prize list of a little over 2 millions Euros. Conversely, Formula One shares a total prize list of 750,000,000 Euros for 20 races.

Given his past stances re: doping (see Ty-Ty's comments re: his time w/ Tinkoff) and his volatility when results don't happen, I'm not certain this is the guy we want leading the charge.
While I agree with some of his messages, I don't think he is the right messenger.

C.K., the thought I had (later) is that Tinkov is a loose cannon, very much like Ted Turner. In a quite different environment, bike racing vs sailboat racing. Equally brash and successful.
I want to see what he does. Ted Turner was a thorn to the New York Yacht Club. They would have banned him, except he kept winning America's Cups for them. Like to our administration (Reagan days). The Russians weren't to be dealt with (Cold War) but Ted Turner went to Moscow with the Goodwill Games.
So I say let Tinkov say whatever he wants. I'll judge him by what he does. And as for Tinkov leading the charge? Without him, I'll bet on the troops never leaving the bunker.

Interesting comparison to Turner and the America's Cup. I can see the similarities......
We'll see how it plays out. I hope I am wrong, but he strikes me as the "win at any cost....ANY cost" kinda guy.
Just say "NO!" to WCP!!!!

Same here CK. He appears to be the "Winning isn't everything, it's the only thing" kind of competitor. I do think some of his thoughts about sharing revenues with teams are smart but lots of other people have suggested that already. We'll see I guess. I'll be the was a treat to deal with in his business world.

he's right about the revenue sharing model and nothing much changing until that does.

He certainly seems to have his head on right when it comes to beer, Russian politics and civil liberties. Good enough for me.
