Looks to off to a good season. Impressive this weekend. 3rd yesterday, then launching a 2 man break and holding on for the win today. Today's break had Valverde doing almost all the work, keeping Pozzovivo around so he could get quick rests. Smart riding and it paid.
Not a huge Valverde fan; I've seen him make too many dumb mistakes but this year he seems to be riding with maturity and using his head. Good for him. If he keeps this up, I'll warm up to him more.

I didn't realize when I followed this race that it (like the other non-Pro Tour races) have no race radio. The second place finisher was complaining about that after the race, saying that had they had radio, they would have instructed Pozzovivo, his teammate, to do no work so they could catch him and Valverde.
No radio makes for much more exciting racing. With it, we would have watched Valverde ground down and caught, then another race decided by a bunch sprint. Without it, teams have to have someone near enough to the front to know what is going on. Ag2r, the team with the man in the break and that ultimately took 2nd place, winning the field sprint, did not and lost that key top podium spot because of it. Sprinters' teams would not be able to just hide in the peloton. Not if they really want to win. They would have to have someone near enough to the front to see who leaves on a break.
Races should be decided at the pointy end, not from the DS's car in the caravan.

I thought Valverde beating up on the others during the TT at Andalucia was an indication that this will be a big year for him. I like him. He has a big sprint particularly in uphill finishes and on a good day he can stay with anyone in the mountains. Good combo TT/sprint/climber -- could win a race or two this year/

If you look at his palmares he is really this generations Jalabert. Not a lot he cannot do with the exception of the Belgian spring classics.

The irony is that Jalabert was prolly dirtier than Valverde ever THOUGHT of being.
