Frank is still there but where's little brother? Oh well, nevermind.
Looks like it'll come down to the usual gallop up Cauberg

down the hill and then the mad rush up
Gilbert clearly a cut above the rest. He's back.

I missed on Kwiatkowski (5th place) and Valverde (4th) but not too shabby. Pegged Orica:
"I'm thinking Kwiatkowski for the win. He has been riding really well this year, is surrounded by a very strong, very smart and unselfish team and I am thinking he is quite motivated.
Gilbert or Valverde up there wouldn't surprise me at all. My gut says Orica-Greenedge won't get past the first step."

Well, I was watching it. My DVR stopped recording after about 40K. Darn...

How dare he win without an aero lid.

Ride On, this is the ~1984th anniversary of a miracle. Gilbert thought it would be fitting to pull off another one in tribute. (Him winning by that margin with a non-aero lid is physically impossible. C.K.'s got the numbers to prove it.)

Interesting finish. I like the Cyclocosm summary.

It looked like Sanchez's attack had Gilbert on his heels a little but then he recovered and rode a little downhill tailwind to victory while Gerrans, Valverde, and Kwiatkowski struggled to recover. Nice bit of riding by PG and BMC and a good payback to BMC by Sanchez.

BMC rode a perfect tactical race.
Van Avermaet put in a ton of work to keep break away as long as possible allowing Gilbert to take it easy. He probably put in the strongest performance of the day.
Sanchez attack at bottom of hill to soften legs of competition. This was plan all along according to GIlbert.
Gilbert putting in attack at only place possible, inside turn on steepest part of hill knowing from previous lap that with tailwind he'd be able to make it stick.
I am not surprised Kwiatkowski could not hang on. Most of top finishers are seasoned riders with racing hardness at top level for many years. Hard for younger ones to match that after 240k. Same with Matthews.
Orica expectedly rode a good race with Weening in break and 4 guys in front group heading to Cauberg but ultimately no one was able to match Gilbert on strenght so the numbers didn't matter.
Fourth time Gilbert wins on the Cauberg.
