Which do you think has more value to the riders, qty of wins in the tour or the green jersey? Which has more value to the team sponsors ? I have a bet with a buddy and we decided to bet on qty of wins and not the green jersey points. |

What year was it that Cav won five stages and didn't get the green, 2010?
Some years the guy who get the points jersey is some one who slips off the front and bags points one or two at a time but when it's showtime at the end of the stage they are nowhere to be found.
I'd take five stage wins over the green jersey every time. |

In a GT most important:
1) GC
2) stage wins
4) young rider
5) green and polka-dot
To directly answer your question, one stage win has more value than the points jersey so three, four, five stage wins has huge value. |

I would reverse 4 & 5 on jm's list (although it could be arguable for the polka-dot jersey vs. the white jersey. White could be of higher value these days....but the green jersey definitely rises above them both).
Here is what you need to remember - stage wins are for that day and that day alone. Wearing a jersey gets you on the awards podium everyday that you have the jersey. So there is arguably more exposure and value for wearing / winning the green jersey.
Another point to remember is longevity. People remember who won the jersey. Sean Kelly won the green jersey in '89 and Zabel won it multiple times w/o winning a stage.....we remember them, but can you tell me who won stage 5 of those races?  |

I came back to edit mine: five stage wins and the green jersey, that's big value.
The media talks about the kid who wins the white jersey until the next TdF so that's a year of extra coverage.
Cosmic, the extra time on the podium for green doesn't add much value because: 1) who watches the podium stuff on TV (sometimes they don't even show it), 2) its a different group of people in each town who watch the ceremony live.
Because of the "evolution" of cycling, the classification jerseys have lost their importance. In Kelly's day it was different. We could discuss several aspects about Zabel's run, but I remember (at least) one year when he was the only one who put an effort into winning the jersey while other fast men were looking for stage victories. |

Just to clarify, I'm not saying that the green jersey > stage wins (multiple). Just putting some additional perspective to the conversation.
Does a single stage win surpass the green jersey? Not really in my book. 2? maybe, maybe not....depends on the stages. 3? Yup.

I think there is more value to having your rider wearing the green jersey day after day and being see on the peloton than you guys are giving credit for, In the US, it's winning; nothing else matters. But the Tour has a long and rich history of the green jersey. That jersey is looked for and seen. Yesterdays's stage winner? He looks just like everybody else.

| I put the Green Jersey above stage wins because of the exposure. The Green Jersey will get more TV time than anybody who wins a stage or two. |

| Don't know about the riders, it probably depends on which one. A rider who isn't a realistic contender for a jersey will obviously say a stage win. Folks like Cav et al. I wonder. It may depend on the day that you ask them! As to the sponsor value, I would think the jersey due to TV time during the stages and all the discussion about who is wearing it and what he needs to do to hold etc. |

I think I read that Zabel said if he could do it over he would go for stage wins over the green jersey. |
