I was just looking at a picture of Sagan posting up, and it occurred to me that I have come to recognize Cannondale bikes as bright green. I wonder if they will be argyle blue next year? Hi-Viz orange with blue argyle hints?

There have been rumors to that change for the last few weeks. Strong possibility to near-certainty, depending on who you talk to.

Not really....Cannondale is looking to reduce their financial commitments. No bike company can justify title sponsorship of a Pro Tour team....at least not for very long.

This. Stupid expensive to foot the bill for a pro team, particularly one that is TdF caliber.

Wait.....so Garmin isn't involved? I was thinking the two Garmin and Cannondale could share the cost, decreasing their individual expenses but increasing the size of the pie.

AFAIK, Garmin will still be the title sponsor for next year (although there have been some rumors otherwise). But the point was that Cannondale is not taking all their $$ from their current team and transferring it to Slipstream. They are going to reduce their financial obligations and be the bike sponsor, not a title sponsor.

So you aren't combining the budgets of two teams to get one massive budget.....you are probably netting out somewhere around the same as where Slipstream was this year.....just with Cannondale replacing Cervelo.

Merger now official.....

Much to my surprise, however, Cannondale will be both a title sponsor and technical sponsor for the team. But it sounds like Garmin will be stepping back on its sponsorship levels.

I've been wondering lately how much of the Garmin pie belongs to bike computers as compared to, say, marine electronics. I've got to think smart phones are eating into the high-end bike computer biz. Of course there are probably Garmin gps chips in a lot of those smart phones.

I doubt that Garmin views the team as solely a marketing exercise for their Edge / Forerunner products. Sure, that is a direct shot for a key demographic of their products, but my guess is that they view the team as a brand awareness opportunity for the entire brand / product lines.

Garmin has done a good job of staying ahead of the technology curve.....smart phones largely decimated their car / dashboard GPS business, but they branched into new areas to keep driving sales.

I for one appreciate, and became familiarized with Garmin, largely from their cycling sponsorship. Cell coverage where I live, work, ride, run, and hike is spotty at best. So, where I want GPS, I use GPS. Their products and cloud support are solid. 'Nuff said.
