bizarre, they weren't even packed in that tight. I wonder if the road was slick, maybe with dust or something. Unfortunately it looked like folks were nervous and not used to riding in a pack.

Looks like one gal on the left touched wheels, went down and it set off a domino effect. One rider laying in a ditch looked like she was out cold turkey, but they said no major injuries.......another rider was run over about 5 times....gads.....

Brutal! They were moving, judging by how far they slid.

One of the videos I watched showed a big clump of riders going down on the opposite side of the road. To me, that is just some poor riding. I was taught that when you hear the crunch, eyes stay straight ahead, attention on full max and I was to do nothing, not slow, not turn, any change at all in my line, unless required to stay up. If all in that right hand bunch had done that, all would have stayed up.
I learned that as a Cat 4 from more experienced riders. Here is a pro field in the World Championships and I am seeing riding worse than I saw as that 4.
Sounds like I am down on women's racing. I am not. In fact, I am a big fan. I place this on the DSs and coaches. When they get one or more national caliber women who have come from small programs, learned to race on their own against men, etc., it is their job to train these women how to handle the realities of racing in the big game. Avoiding crashes and not causing more is racing 101. The DSs have a responsibility to educate their riders to protect the most important investment in their team and the showcase for their sponsors. I see serious work to be done. I hope this leads to some big changes.
Two riders touch wheels? There aren't riders right around them. So two crash, three go off the road into the ditch to avoid them and the rest ride by. Right? This is pro racing at it's highest level. 40 riders go down? Huh?

To Ben's point, WTH was the woman from NZ doing? The crash was well underway and she came barrelling into it, very late and at top speed. There was no need for he to be going that fast at that point. She was well abck of the crash and should have been able to stop in time.
Just say "NO!" to WCP!!!!

Likeways I was a little baffled by how long this crash kept going on.
I'd only add that at Worlds you have a mixed bag that involves riders from countries with relatively unexperienced cyclists; not sure the degree to which that may have contributed.
