If I read correctly he's riding for the record later this week, in London. If he rides to his potential, he may set a record that will stand for a long, long time. If not, then let the snark begin. Or, since this is a forum, why wait?

Oh, he'll get the record...the only question is can he get to 55km and how long will it stand? Fabian no longer seems interested in the mark, so that really only leaves Tony Martin say a potential contender (at this time). In a straight up TT, they are close, but I'd give Martin the overall nod 9/10 times. On the track, I give Wiggo a slight edge. |

I'm more interested in how it is even possible to 3D print using titanium. |

No schitt....didn't think it was possible and the technology was limited to plastics. |

I could be wrong but I believe the process for 3D printing titanium is similar to using a hot-glue gun. The material is simply extruded through a very small tip in layers. Tiny, tiny layers. After a while, it builds up and provides you with a hollow part that otherwise couldn't be fabricated. One big issue with this is that you lose some of the favorable qualities of titanium since the material isn't really a solid structure. It's been sliced and diced. I find it funny when I hear people talk about 3D printing carbon-fiber. They obviously don't understand how or why carbon-fiber is strong and light. Creating it in sliced layers is not a great idea. But hey, it's great marketing jargon!

That is right - the titanium starts out in powdered form and is "added" a layer at a time then treated via a current or laser to create a rigid product structure. The advantage is one can create a light and complex shape in titanium , hence customized bends for his needs. Not an expert, just read a few articles as I have a neighbor who sells high end 3d printers and I had no idea how they worked, but it sounded interesting. Some people are getting custom knee or bone replacements using this technology. Anyway, I think Wiggo will get a record. Curious to see how well he does! J |

It's on now. His 55.25 goal is looking out of reach at this point |

Not 55km, but 54.5 is still pretty damn impressive. Shatters the old record, but was definitely fading towards the end. His position looked great!! Smooth transition from helmet to his back, completely flat and very solid. |

so these guys know they can break the record going into this, correct? i mean, they get on their home track and crank it out just to make sure they can do it on an official track under uci supervision? so he probably has cranked out a 55kmh, just not officially. |

I doubt they go the whole distance until it matters. Way too draining physically and emotionally. I say that, but didn't someone fail to set the record and come back days later and make it? There was also an attempt (shortly after Merckx?) that failed, as did his second attempt soon after. (Danish rider as I recall.) Ben |

Wasn't it Graham Obree who failed and then succeeded? |

Ole Ritter was the guy after Merckx who tried and failed.
There have been a number of riders who have failed on a first attempt (usually stopping) and then coming back a day or toe later and nailing it when conditions improve. IIRC, Merckx himself did it (but could be wrong). |
