From Vaughters: "Europe is whiskey-and-cigarette racing. U.S. racing is organic kale, and then hold hands afterwards."

So what does that make the Richmond Worlds? Cigarettes? Check (big tobacco is centered in Richmond and North Carolina).Whiskey? Close, but that's Tennessee. We do have very good beer. Does that count?
I think JV would have made a lot more sense if he said pro cycling is war in Europe and merely sport here.

Pontificating tangent (read at your own peril, or just ignore!):
Soccer is a more pointed example. It's a surrogate for war for countries that have fought each other for centuries. It's important! In contrast, in the US, the "big game" is mostly just an excuse for a picnic.
Despite our violent tendencies here in the US, I think we've got this one right.

Not too many American pro races where El Jefe throws down with striking shipyard workers.

When I was young (pre-memory), we lived in Paris for a year, and traveled to Italy, Lebanon...

However, as an adult, aside from Canada and Mexico, I took one trip to Spain and France. I always idealized Europe as the place where cycling was a real sport and car races didn't go around in circles, etc. Both those things are true, and there are a lot of things I prefer about that continent to mine. However, it wasn't perfect, and made me appreciate my own country a little more.

a lot of trust-fund kids racing bikes in the US.

Also I think it is a lot easier to sit in and finish a race in the US than in Europe where you maybe banging bars and fighting for wheels all day.

I have been impressed with some of the young US riders in the Vuelta this year but when it counts, they are not getting results. That article on VN was interesting telling how the first 2 years for an american in europe are lost just to figuring out how to live and building up the immune system and figuring out the peloton. A lot of that was supposed to be overcome by sending kids over while they are still in high school but I haven't heard much about that program lately.

Curious...this is a traditional Dutch meal...granted its not organic but still. And no, we don't flush it down with Whiskey. Maybe a big glass of milk. That'll get you race ready!

I get an image of six day races two decades or more ago when they would race in cigarette smoke filled velodromes. Patrons drinking and smoking. Very unlike the Americas where the audience is as health conscious as the athletes. The image is dated but at the roots of cycling.
