It's neutral. He was abrasive and bad for sport in some ways but at same time had a number of good ideas on how to improve the business model and he was right on challenging ASO's grip on power. The fact that he is stepping out shows that behind all the brouhaha that is his public image he is making informed decisions that make business sense.

I think cycling is losing. Tinkoff was abrasive. Treading delicately wasn't his forte. None-the-less, he is one of the brighter minds in the sport and his love of it is genuine. I wish cycling had embraced this thorn a little more. I think all parties would benefit. Just wouldn't always be fun! (especially for organizations that go by three letters).

Well, I can see that losing sponsorship/team hurts the sport, and most of all hurts the team's riders. I think he should have just tried to play nice, but that is not his style.
He was just too abrasive in his methods, he's a businessman, plain and simple. Trying to strongarm the powers that be was not the way to go about things

Yup Zoot, I have to look at this fool and his antics for one more season.................

Gonzo - ASO are the ones doing the strongarming. I don't think it's a coincidence that Oleg announces his departure a week after Cookson has to admit that modernizing the sport ain't going to happen because of ASO's resistance. Cookson is losing an ally unlikely as that may seem.

Is everyone forgetting his all-but-outright spoken expectation that his riders should dope to win back when he sponsored Tinkoff Credit Systems (now known as Katusha)?
