He apparently suffered a kidney injury in his crash yesterday....the fact that he was able to not only catch pn, but then attack, counter Kwiatkowski and win the race is phenomenal.
Just say "NO!" to WCP!!!!

There is a toughness cycling pros have that you don't see many other places.
I remember a meme a few years ago showing Curt Schilling's sock with a little blood on it and everyone was in awe at his toughness, then the photo of the TdF guys who got run through the barbed wire fence or any number of pros that crash, jump on the bike, and chase back on.

I think that the pain tolerance of a cyclist is insanely high. When you race, it is about suffering though the pain. Went spring skiing last weekend in a t-shirt. I haven't spilled at all this winter. I had a mechanical failure that caused a fall on my elbow. I was bleeding a bit at bottom when someone noticed and asked if it hurt. I looked and hadn't realized it. It sort of hurt... Hmmm.

a week of recovery...this one's not too dramatic. Ten Dam after his barbed wire encounter now that was something. There's a few more like that.
My kid did soccer tryouts with a sprained toe/bruised foot foregoing the 2 week recovery...two days of limping after each tryout session...it got stepped on a couple of times...if you want something you'll bite through the pain.

The more you are able to endure pain, the less likely you probably are to become addicted to opiates.

The endogenous opioids of endurance sports are powerful indeed. I'll wager he wasn't feeling the pain during the race anywhere near like he did later.
"When I crashed, I felt pain, but once I remounted and continued the race things became better and better and the pain disappeared. Unfortunately, after the finish, the lower back pain returned, so together with the team doctor I decided to go to the hospital for a check-up,"
Not to dismiss the toughness of pro cyclists or top level athletes in any sport, but the cyclists are in a way as high as a kite when doing what they do. Isn't that a major reason why we ride?

I think there are two kinds of pain. If it's something that you can grit your teeth and bare, and not do harm, that's one thing. But when your'e further injuring something that's another. So, riding with painful road rash, to me, is toughing it out. But blowing out an injured tendon is not smart. Just my 2 cents. And, hey, I've never been more than an occasionally near the front of the pack by accident kinda guy.
