Last weekend was Hurtland, a C-2 CX race in Tulsa. My two team mates and I raced; 35+, 50+, and 60+. A buddy and his wife also raced-- he's a Cat 3's, she races Pro Women. They hang out with us, share our compound and we stay at each others places when we're in each others towns.
Not team mates but we act like it.
Hurtland pays crazy money... Cat 4's split $1,000 and pay 7 deep as do all the fields except juniors and Cat 5's. The elites pay $5,000 if I remember right. Every Masters field got a grand. Literally everyone in the 60+ got cash for racing. Nutty, I know but I digress.
I walked into our team tent area and saw a woman warming up on the trainer, she looked up and said, "I don't think we've met, I'm Caroline." "Hey Caroline, I'm Dale"
...uh... is this THE Caroline I'm thinking it is? Yup, red/ white/ blue bike and 'Mani' on the back of her warm up jacket.
Anyway we ended up having Caroline (French national cx champ and 2nd at Worlds) hang out in our compound along with another elite woman, neither of whom had any support so we jumped in, my team mates worked the pit for Caroline and the other woman, and I went to the start line to grab bottles and warm ups then met them at the finish with jackets and bottles.
It was a fun experience and typified the cool, pitch in and help vibe of cross.
Caroline took the win, the other woman that hangs out with us got 2nd, and the thread woman picked up her first UCI points with an 8th (I think) place finish. |
