Is 2018 gonna be Porte's year?

So Porte was definitely shaping up to be Froome's main challenger in 2017....would have been interesting to see how the Tour played out had he not crashed. I don't think Froome would have had the options of just following wheels.

Given that Froome is targetting the Double (and many other contenders are also going for the Giro), does that leave Porte in the driver's seat for July? He will be fresher w/o a GT in his legs...could that make the difference?

The variable in this is obviously whether or not he can get back to his 2017 level following his crash.....

My answer: No
Not saying he definitely won't podium, but he has a track record of finding a way not to succeed when the spotlight is on.

@ LSD.....agreed 100% on your point re: his history. He has always had an amazing ability to find a way to schitt the bed in critical moments.

No change in light of Froome's dopage. Porte will take a couple one-week stage races but I don't see him winning at GT. Ahead of him for GTs, I see Dumoulin, Miguel Ángel López and possibly Quintana if he can refind his legs. I'm left to wonder what kind of sanction Froome will face for 2018 and if he will even tow the line at the Giro or Tour. One other thought - is Contador thinking of unretiring now that it looks like Froome may be out of the picture?

I am waiting to see what UCi does. The absolute minimum slap on the hands for miscalculating the dosage of a needed allergy medicine or two full years as it is pretty clear Froome have not likely won the Vuelta without and there is precedent. Contador and his tiny positive. Slap on the hands to keep the good picture rolling is UCI's preferred mode of operation

One thing that makes this interesting is the UCI president. It was Cookson who climbed out of the same bed as Sky. Now it the Frenchman, Lappartient. The French have no love for outsiders who dominate their Tour. I wonder if Sky got complacent with their inside connection to Cookson.
