Stage one was a lot more eventful than the course profile suggested it should be.  Some early big losers.  Sky got what they wanted (almost) and it was a rather good day for Movistar.

Interesting fact I read yesterday re: Valverde.  In over 200 stage starts, he has finished outside the top 20 4 times.  I read that before he placed 16th in the Prologue.  Succeeded again today.

Quintana is off to a solid start.  Now in 9th, 33 seconds down.  Very respectable Prologue yesterday.  Just did what he needed to today, finished in the front group, 3 seconds of the top two.

This could be a good, watchable Vuelta.  Too bad I'll be in the boonies for the last week.  (Cycle Oregon - if we do not get fire driven route changes, we will spend the second night at Wallawa Lake in the old Nez Perce summer camp where they fished and dries sockeye salmon and used it as a base camp for the big game hunts in  there.  We were thwarted by fire from using that site as our rest day 3 years ago.  I've wanted to camp there since I learned about it at my first CO at Chief Josoph's grave site at the other end of the lake.)

I was scrolling through the channels on my Dish Network guide Saturday (8/25) and noticed that the Olympic channel (369 in our area) is showing the Vuelta. I have our DVR scheduled to tape all cycing events, but Dish lists them by name of race, not under cycling.

I noticed that my kid (the one that bikes now) seems to be developing into a Sky fan. Suffice to say I am non-plussed. But the way it goes with teens, if I push back against it, that would likely backfire. He also seems to be quickly gathering knowledge on doping and the performance increase one can get from various products (including inhalers LOL), the history of he who shall not be named, etc. None of this comes from me; not sure what he's reading.

Wilko Kelderman's mechanical in the late miles (~12k to the finish). Brake rub after a crash close call. (Teammate hitting his wheel from behind?) He waited for a wheel. Cost him a minute he never got back. He finished 1:44 down.

To me, this sounds like poor on-the-fly race management. Flip off the brake release, suck it up and chase like your life depended on it. Need an example? Alberto Contador the year Andy Schleck messed up his shift. Stage 12, the cobbles, where Contador did a mostly solo chase of hours on a bad rear wheel to finish within a minute of Schleck and save his Tour. (Where in my opinion, the Tour was really won that year.)

I put this on Kelderman. His DS wasn't going to know until he got there and by that time precious time was already lost. Granted, he may have had more serious issues than just rubbing the brake pad. I wasn't there.

A pleasure to watch a plugger like Ben King have it all come together this week. Lovely reward for a good career in the shadows. I wish him more success.
Also a pleasure to watch a GT that is open and competitive. I have no idea who will win on any day or at the end. Which is a good thing.

Great stage today....I knew Yates had taken the jersey before I watched, but that was all I knew. I assumed he had gone off the front and attacked. So how the stage developed was quite fascinating, since he lost time to many of the GC favorites, but still ended up in the jersey.

King...man. What a stud. Greta battle of wills with Mollema.

Movistar had a good day. Valverde stayed in contention on a day that was not his specialty and Quintana did just fine. A little sad to see Kiatkowski lose time. I do not care for his team, but he is classy so I have mixed emotions.

And yes, that was fun racing to follow. so not TdF!

Top 10 finish results, in a nice jump in the GC for Brambilla. I'll have to watch today's stage later on tonight.

Looks like the Vuelta is slowly coming to a boil and a bunch more exciting stages to come.

Quintana is looking good. So is Yates. But there are better TTers behind that are still relatively close and the gaps aren't huge yet.

Three days in the mountains. Uran is done. Four man race now. I think Yates is the strongest going uphill. Three mountain stages remain. Plus TT. I think it is really a two man race between valverde and yates. Quintana has not impressed.

Agreed on Quintana. Curious how much Kruijswijk can take back in iTT. If memory serves the iTT was also moment where things went sideways for Yates in Giro. He got a good result but never recovered from it.
