So, aside from racing as a junior in the early '80's, and then watching the tour when it's on TV, I don't follow "all things bike racing", so if this had been discussed to death...sorry. I was reading something in Velonews about the boringness of a dominant team like Sky with super deep pockets. Has there ever been the idea of a salary cap in cycling?

It’s been floated, but I see no chance of it ever being implemented. The UCI is essentially toothless and ASO is the dominant force in cycling. They have no incentive to push for a salary cap.

It certainly isn’t in the favor of the stronger tams to push for it, so the only ones pushing for it are the teams that can’t “compete”.

The gap between the “haves” and the “have nots” is increasingly opening. Heard on the Cycling Tips pod last week that SKY’s budget next year is $50M...no other team is even close to that. So not only can they sign two Tour winners to their roster, they can lock up the next generation of contenders as well (Bergal, etc).

Now once SKY realizes that they aren’t getting anything close to a decent ROI on that $50M, or just decide it is time to leave the sport (inevitable at some point), I think the gap will close substantially. Not many companies willing to drop that kind of cash on cycling right now.
Just say "NO!" to WCP!!!!

As much as I'm happy that there's sponsor money in cycling, yeah, I can't imagine that's a dollars and cents/sense investment.
