Tirreno-Adriatico, Paris-nice and Milan-San Remo likely to follow....

Worse, the entire Classics campaign could be threatened now. Reports of a cluster of COVID19 in Wevelegem, basically ground Zero for the Classics.

Meanwhile a bunch of dudes still stuck in that hotel in UAE.

This will take about 3-4 months to blow over. Giro is a maybe, Tour should be safe. But everyone will lack racing legs lol.

Overreacting? I don't know. Latest thinking is the mortality may be more like 1 percent, which is still 5-10x greater than the flu but better than the 3+ estimate previously. All subject to revision. More than one strain is active, and they probably are not equally dangerous.

Italy has over 100 deaths, China had how many 1000s; hard to argue over-reacting with those kind of numbers although for vast majority this will indeed just blow over.

It is over-reacting in my mind in sense that the containment will just slow the spread of virus, it will not actually prevent spread. Ultimately it will go global. Costa Rica just reported its first suspected case. My prediction is it will have a bunch more after spring break travel and same will happen with other travel hot spots.

Also, things in US/UK (and I am guessing Canada) are under-reported by at least an order of magnitude. The definition of suspected cases is too narrow. The unofficial tally in Seattle area may be closer to 100, which matches the single death and mortality rate (series of interesting tweets with retrospective analysis last weekend).

I was in no way saying people were over-reacting....it is a serious health threat, not just because of the relatively high death rate, but because of the ease with which the virus seems to spread....and worse the fact that is seems to spread while you are non-symptomatic.

Take a bunch of people, cram them together and have riders interacting with them.....and some of those riders have clearly been exposed to the virus (Gaviria has actually tested positive for it).

I know everyone is trying to figure out what "real" mortality rate is, but the numbers, for the time being, speak for themselves....it is ~3% of documented cases. Hell, in the US, it is closer to 10%....at least for now.

I have to fly through SFO and then drive up to Lodi next week and I would really rather not go, but it is a funeral for my uncle, so.....

Sorry about your uncle. Did not mean to imply I disagreed with you. I was wondering out loud if cancelling these events is overreaction. Not saying I think that, but in retrospect we may think that. Or not.
I agree with OC that current measures will slow but not stop. One advantage of stalling is more time for vaccine development. Hope they can keep up with the mutations.

Thanks....he was actually the Mayor of Lodi when the ToC rolled through town a few years ago. Was always interesting to hear his stories about some of the behind-the-scenes stuff.

It’s a situation only offers wrong or bad choices and whichever way you go with it there’s certainty of negative impact.

If you want a painful chuckle, watch the video of Trump at the CDC today. What a clown. Fat stupid people probably are immune anyway.

The orange turd has to go, no matter how brilliant he thinks he is. Pence is no great shakes either, just ask Indiana. Remember "Periods for Pence" when women sent him used tampons?
Biden or Sanders were not my first choices, but either would be better than this idiot, the Twit-in-Chief.

Just read that all of Italy is under lock-down with even recreational cycling being frowned upon. Goes without saying that Giro won't be happening. Not wanting to diminish the seriousness of everything going on but I'm thinking that companies like Zwift, Wahoo and Tacx are looking at this with dollar signs in their eyes.

Zwift has already scheduled rides with the Michelton-Scott team....a whole host of different events this week.

Can’t believe what a schittshow this is turning into....i just had to bail on going to my uncle’s funeral this week. I just can’t risk bringing the virus into my house with my wife’s immune system already suppressed.

And then last night I can down with flu like symptoms....fever, aches, chills. My daughter had the flu last week and I had the shingles vaccine yesterday. Almost certainly one of those two issues are causing it....off to get a flu test shortly.

Sorry to hear that, CK. Didn't know there was an actual flu test. Thought there were too many variations.

Since this virus is asymptomatic for up to 2 weeks and we are in the very middle of flu/cold season, anyone that even develops a slight cough will think - and rightfully so - they have coronavirus. This is a mess.

I fully expect a worldwide economic downturn that will make the after-effects of 9/11 seem like a picnic.

Shingles vaccine is pretty much guaranteed to make you feel like you're coming down with something, but usually is clearly improving after a day.
