Horrible video of the women's finish. Shot into the late afternoon sun completely blew out the exposure. You couldn’t tell who anyone was. Several minutes later they showed the overhead helicopter footage of a nice sprint. Why don’t they just show that live?

I heard one person say it just looks like popcorn popping when viewed from the front.

I'm off the back. Slept in. But Girmay? This is Mohoric/dropper post pro bike racing game changing only much bigger. There is a pool of talent in his continent that will do to pro bike racing what their cousins have done to the US major pro sports. Won't happen overnight. But barring a life shortening event, I will get to see it in my lifetime! This is a Jackie Robinson moment. (Now if we can only get Patrick Lefevere to sign an African.)

Especially cool that this wasn't an easy race and Girmay was very active. (And was active also a few days ago, finishing 5th in his first cobbled race.)

Fully agreed Dale. It’s the same staring at a bunch of shadows against sun every year. You’d think they’d figure it out someday.

Girmay looked shattered after Kemmelberg but still found winning move and then a great sprint execution. The main challenge for him to step it up further is question on moving family to Europe and whether it’s worth it (fame and money versus disruption). Actually reading just now they already tried that and it didn’t work out (use translate option): https://sporza.be/nl/2021/09/24/wie-is-bini-girmay-de-afrikaanse-sensatie-die-wielergeschiedenis-schrijft-en-alle-harten-verovert~1632498017473/

Btw this is something UCI got right. They sniffed him out as a teenager and brought him to their training camp in Switzerland.

The next step needed is for a team to so embrace an African that they take it on as a given that they have to welcome and protect his family. The US ground breakers had fans that looked like them in every city they played. Wives and kids saw fellow Blacks regularly. So even if things were a little rocky with teammates, they knew they weren't alone. Now, life in Europe is probably safer than for the families of the US ground breakers, but they spoke the language and knew the ways. And many of the US' first had communities of their fellows to live in.

Wow, quite a show of home town love, thanks for this link. I hope his fans allow him some time with his family. And his success inspires more aspiring cyclists.
