She just won her 31st stage victory in the Giro d'Italia Donne.  Not too shabby for the queen of cyclocross who's also OK on a MTB.

Curious hos long she’ll keep going.

Van Vleuten announced her retirement. Van Breggen already retired.

The best part of Giro and racing in general this year is how it showed the increased depth of womens peloton. There’s no longer a unilateral Dutch dominance. There’s still plenty strong riders on the orange side but other countries have stepped it up. Excellent development.

New race but Vos yet again. Yes, she'll probably have to part with the yellow jersey after tomorrow and reclaim her green one.

I just read a portion of her statement after today's Tour win. Her English isn't perfect but works well. Got to thinking - I bet she knows enough Flemish to manage. Probably capable in both French and Italian.

I struggled mightily in French a long time ago. Smatterings of Italian and Spanish. My sis did well in French, taught ESL, went to Italy for a summer before teaching ESL for a year in Poland. Met an Italian while there, came back to Italy after the year, they married and now have two adult bi-lingual offspring. All three move easily between the languages and cultures. I envy them. (Her husband is still quite Italian, now understands English well but limited speech.)

I had John Wayne as German language instructor so my understanding of the language is a bit skewed.

Scope of Italian understanding is limited from determining whether the in-laws are gossiping about me and determining when food might be served.

Never been able to wrap my head around Spanish. French was a major in high school.

Flemish is just a purer form of Dutch or at least that's what the Belgians claim. For longest time they were more resistant to include modern English words in their dictionary. In recent years the Belgians have strayed the other way and now all their sports teams have horribly catchy/tacky English names (Belgian Cats etc.).

Interesting to see Vos reduced to an also ran in cyclocross circuit. There’re definitely a generation change going on with Van Empel, Pieterse and van Amrooij. Alvarado also in mix.

Also nice interview with current multidisciplinary beast Prevot who credited riding together with Vos earlier in career. Didn’t realize they were in same team.

And maybe winning in the mud vs on asphalt requires choices with ever increasing specialization in the monetized pro ranks.
Along this line of thought, I'm watching as road gravel evolves similar to MTB way back in the day. US feel good exuberance and joy that was truly only minimally tinged by winner takes all is now trumped by bigger bucks and skilled professionalism from the Continent. No judgement, just a natural evolution once the money comes in. Something is lost, something is gained.

100% and I make this point all the time...the parallels to the early 90's and MTB are striking.

Almost a carbon copy to what happened then.
Just say "NO!" to WCP!!!!

Hey! The Continent feels pretty much the same about everything else in life (except that football game that you mispronounce as soccer). Good exuberance and joy, except the US trumps it with bigger bucks, bigger guns etc. (not necessarily more professionalism).
