They didn't do it as a weight savings, it was a mistake made when assembling the cranks. Rotor was able to identify the problem after the team mechanics grabbed the parts from the start ramp after the crash. Props to Rotor for getting out in front of this as quickly as possible and identifying the issue.
CK, I was hardly serious about the weight savings. Guess I needed a smiley.
I've done the opposite. Killed cranksets using double bolts and just one chainring. Perfectly safe. But when you take the worn out ring off, you find the bolt holes are elongated big time.
