Fucking horrific....when there were no updates on his condition throughout the day, I was fearing the worst.

Peace to his friends and family.

Cycling lost a truly good soul.

Crazy sport if you think about it.

Is this a one off bad luck tragedy, or a call for rethinking courses? The newish road furniture and related takes out some riders, e.g. Roglic last July. And there are countless other dumbass risks like the car in 2011 TDF that put a rider into barbed wire (still a WTF were you thinking and as far as I know to this day they shielded the VIP in that car fu k you). But this is far more serious.

At this point it looks like a tragic fluke incident. Unfortunately a part of the sport. At those speeds it takes little to cause a serious (deadly) crash.

I read the article on Evenepoel's rant on that descent long before anyone knew Mader didn't make it. That such a descent should never be in the last 10k of an important race simply because everyone who feels that race is important has to go down it as fast as possible to maximize their finish. His take - finish that race at the summit. (Ben here) Yes that makes parking, getting everybody down, etc. a nightmare, but - everybody gets to race their heart out and live. Not do-able? Put that climb and descent in the first half of the race where a sane descent doesn't cost you thousands of Euros left on the table.

As someone put pointedly it’s a 100% possible to eliminate finish descends from bike racing. But where does this leave a race like MSR which is based on that concept?

Saw a video and pics of where Gino went off the road (not the actual accident). It was coming out of a fast sweeping left hand turn. After exiting the apex, the riders went to the right hand side of the road and just as they got there, the road curved in, ever so lightly, to the left. He just went straight and launched into a deep ditch.

No guardrails or anything….it was almost invisible to the eye coming out of the left hand turn.

Here is the video….it is of Ayuso taking the turn, not Gino’s crash.

The descend is featured with some regularity. High speed but not super technical.

Just reading an interview with John Talen, rider in Peter Post team back in day, now pops in law of Wilco Kelderman. He crashed hard on this descend in 1987 maybe the same turn he wasn’t quite sure. As he put it high speed and it was going smoothly but at some point he lost the overview of successive turns and found himself too far to right. That’s the last thing he remembers.

One of rare times he wore a helmet or what passed for that back then, which reportedly saved his life.
