I know it's not professional but there are some ex-pros in the ranks.

The fields are amazingly small. The races aren't until l Dec so they'll be more added to the list but for the 2nd week of Oct it looks pretty thin.

One more year and I'd be racing against three other guys!

And the women's groups? Tell your wife, mom, aunt, grandma to get their passport renewed, buy a UCI license and they might be the next age category World Champ. In some age groups all they have to do is finish to podium.

My friend went to UCI Masters track worlds in LA last year and that was still quite competitive at least in his age group (58) although I don't think there was an ex-pros. He got a silver out of it and a few top 5 placings.

I've been telling my friend I'll join the racing ranks at age 70 or 80 once the field thins out sufficiently to podium.

At Jingle Cross a few years back in the 60+ group there was a ex-pro in my field, he raced the Giro back in his prime.

A team mate raced US Crit Nats and said two of the guys in his age group have altitude tents and another guy logged 15,000+ miles last year. 70+ age group IIRR

What I've discovered is the fields might be smaller but the top guys are still crazy competitive and strong.
The guys that were pack-fill/ back-burners/ participants in the 40+ have dropped out of racing by the time they hit 60. Golf, injuries, retirement, travel, burnout all take a toll and the field goes from 100 to 30 but those 30 still have enough anger in their stomach (to quote Andy Schleck) to dish out some pain.

Yeah it’s funny how some of these ex pros keep going. Last year my friend ended up duking it out with Pascal Herve of Festina fame at Canadian road masters championships. Between the two of them they put a big gap on rest of field.

This is 100% my plan to eventually win a national / world title….I just have to outlive / out move the competition. 🤪

In the starting grid at Jingle Cross a few years back we were commenting on the progressively diminishing fields lined up: 40, 50, 60.

More than one made similar statements. "I just gotta outlive you guys and in ten years I'll be the reigning champ."

Yeah, in a field of two
