Brian Cookson is a breath of fresh air for UCI, whose windows haven't been opened for years.  I hope he can come in and make big changes.

This is exactly what our sport needs.  Someone with passion and no strong ties to what is.  Yes he is on the Sky board, but I assume he will step down cleanly as soon as he is elected.

He sounds like he would be unafraid to open the issues that UCI created the panel to address, then panicked and disbanded after they started thinking about what might get unearthed.

This idea of a sport parents wouldn't mind sending their kids to, that's both a high standard and pretty cool.

Ben, there is a very good article about the need for change in pro cycling bak on VN (I know, I know, but they do have good articles occasionally)

Good article RNDDUDE. It is not just about replacing one guy with another. Given the divided powers in cycling and the big role race organizers have, perhaps the baseball analogy is the best one.

Cookson seems to have been able to pull Brit cycling out of the duldrums, that is good. But do we want cycling to run as smoothly as the Sky Train in France last year?

being a banana republic, the UCI needs a colonial power to drag it into the 21st century.

I see Pat McQuaid hasn't changed much. If you like the past 8 years and want nothing changed, he's your man.

I've been wondering lately, what is the motivation for being the UCI president?

The problems run very deep. It is time for a serious makeover of the entire road/mtn/track cycling sport.

One idea - Team Franchises. It works in most other sports. Will help create a more loyal fan base as affinity grows over time for the 'local' team.

I've bounced this around for a while with others and won't divulge the full details. Let's jsut say that a premiership division Pro Franchise will require the services of a velodrome, must field Pro men, women in all three major cycling disciplines, road, mtb, and track. Size of squads tbd but a minimum will be required for each. Some wildcards for those who pursue 4-cross and/or BMX in support of local market conditions and available facilities.

There are mechanisms for the lower tier franchises to 'share' velodrome and other hard assets either with similar level franchises and/or the premiership level.

Team kit may actually remain fairly constant in look for a change! Yes, that is a good thing when one is trying to build a brand.

Hahaha, if we are to believe McQuaid then the UCI will change from a banana republic to being run by the Russian mob. But maybe Cooke's candidacy is the backdoor entry to making the Sky World Tour of Cycling a reality? http://www.bloomberg.com/news/2013-02-28/bskyb-news-corp-said-to-discuss-breakaway-cycling-series.html Either way, mud slinging to look forward to.

McQuaid has launched a media campaign bashing Cooke's, looks like to me that he is quite worried. I would say after the LA scandel, McQuaid should just step down and fade away, but he's not smart enough to know his era tarnished
