This would be funny if it wasn't so sad.

Will giving him the boot he deserves make things better? I dunno. Sporting organizations tend to be little feifdoms. I certainly don't have any hopes pinned on this. Making cycling better is gonna take lots more than replacing the guy at the top, it may be a start, but only a small step.

"Dude needs to realize he needs to step aside for the best interests of cycling."

This assumes that he has cycling's and not his own interests top of mind. I've seen nothing that would indicate this.

I like Pat. I completely disagree with the popular opinion of him out of the USA and GB. He has taken more crap for things the UCI could not have done any differently under the structures and rules of the sport which is a part of the UCI I worked for. Franky Cookson is making promises he cannot deliver without rule changes either. World wide he is a lot more popular than you might think and the vote will be a lot closer than you imagine. of the 175 federations I think fewer than 20 or 30 actually oppose his leadership. So many critics don't know what his powers are or what his authority is. As for this Malaysian move? I think the suggested process is at least as democratic as the current method and there is still an election. That Pat would just stand aside and let Brian Cookson in would not be good for the sport either. As for USA cycling. In my book they never really wanted to do anything the rules required hence the issues with licensing and domestic racing. Seems that Americans only want to do things their way no matter when they joined or who runs the club. Is Pat perfect? No one is and every leader gets stuff flung his way. I won't predict the outcome but I think you all better be prepared for another term.

European Cycling Union president speaks up in a letter to McQuaid.. http://www.velonation.com/News/ID/15153/Lappartient-warns-McQuaid-that-Article-51-change-could-lead-to-suspicion-and-the-perception-of-manipulation.aspx

Interesting that apparently to place an article before the UCI Congress, it must be submitted 90 days before. (Sept 27 - 90 days = July 5th.) UCI Article 31 states:

"Article 31
1. The agenda of the Congress shall be drawn up by the Management Committee.
2. A federation wishing to include one or more items in the agenda of the Congress, or to put a
question to the Management Committee, shall submit its draft proposals stating the reasons on
which they are based or the text of its question, in English or in French, to the registered office
of the UCI at least ninety days before the date of the Congress.
3. With the exception of alterations to the Constitution, any question not on the agenda of the
Congress can be added to be discussed and voted on by the Congress at the request of fifteen
federations.
4. Except in cases where the preceding point applies, no vote shall be taken on any question
which is not on the agenda."

I confess this was lifted from a commenter on the above article, not acquired thru rigorous research. Master 50, do you know if this article 31 is correct and if it applies here? It does sound like 15 Federations can have anything non-constitutional discussed. Is the nominating procedure part of the constitution?

this is a link to the UCI Constitution and frankly this is one part of the rulebook I never read since the middle 90s.

Politics are to be avoided by me. I tend to speak my mind regardless of the fallout. Probably another reason I left the sport as a racing official.

So Pat McQuaid has lived in Switzerland for 8 years, starting shortly before his presidency. It is his home as he likes to point out. So no issues with belonging to the Swiss Cycling federation like he does the Irish Cycling.

Mr. McQuaid joined Swiss Cycling in May of 2013. OK, so he had been busy and it has take him a few years to get around to joining. And it is pure coincidence that it happened to be April 26th of 2013 that Irish Cycling decided to have a membership wide vote on his nomination. And likewise, that his nomination from Swiss Cycling happened May 16, 2013.

http://www.velonation.com/News/ID/15191/Swiss-Cycling-confirms-that-McQuaid-only-became-a-member-in-May-of-this-year.aspx

I feel my legs getting pulled. (I would like to see when his memberships to the other 5 or so cycling federations started, esp Morocco and Thailand.)

"He’s taken the view that he [Makarov] would prefer if I wasn’t president, as a result of that. So he is working against me. He’s done several things and he’s certainly not working for me. I hope his influence doesn’t swing the result.” -- Pat McQuaid, quoted in cycling news.com this morning

These sentences may clarify Pat's nomination by the Malaysian Federation: he now speaks Manglish, the official Creole of Malaysia.

Did I hear a rumor that Pat McQuaid has contacted a realtor in Egypt? And another in Thailand because Egypt gets too warm for him the summer?
