Well, I think Valverde has a rep for botching up World's finales at this point He messed up when Ballan won, he botched it up when Gilbert won and now this year. |

According to Valverde, he was blown and couldn't cover Costa when he went. Dunno if that qualifies as "botching it"......it was a damn hard race and tough to tell who had what left in the tank. That said, as the guy with the strongest sprint int he group, it seems kinda hard to believe he couldn't at least give it shot to latch onto Costa....but when youa re blown, you are blown. |

I agree with jmdirt. Sounds like the coach is throwing Valverde under the bus to deflect criticism of Spain's performance although two podium places isn't all that shabby. I'd be more impressed if he stood up for his riders. |

would you have rather been on the Spanish bus or on the British bus? I guess coming so close is more painful than having no riders left in the last 100k. |

This is heat of the moment commentary coming from a Spanish heart which is pretty heated to begin with. Chinook is right, the British coach should be fuming more. Only Cav put in his worth. All that said, my feeling from Valverde's commentary is that there's something not being said, but it's just a hunch. |

Im not buying it that Valverde was cooked. He made it over the Fiesole with the front guys, it's not like he chased back on. He either didn't chase on purpose or tactically cocked it up but he should have made some effort. If he had enough to beat Nibs in a sprint he could have chased Costa. As far as the Brits (Sky) go, jesus I bet the tour GC favorites hope it rains cats and dogs at the next tour and maybe the UCI gets rid of race radios as water is seemingly kryptonite to those power meter staring cyborgs and without someone telling them what to do they apparently forget they are racing bicycles. |

My read is that any outcome is a better one for Valverde than another Spaniard winning the Worlds. |

ha ha ha OC, and Chinook, where were the Brits? kind of like the last conversation I was having with some Brits about who the true and greatest sailors of this globe were back in the day. Not to be found, or when they were in Jamestown, my ancestors were warming them selves on the beach. But, where was the Spanish Armada at the end of this race? Valverde can bring it, but when things get crazy, that guy ALWAYS blows it. I'm of Spanish descent, but also have some Portuguese blood in me, I'll take the win!! ha ha ha ha |
