The event started yesterday. I wrote a bit about the Six Day racing madness.

Couple of my English friends go every year, been doing so since mid 70's. They always invite me to go but just can't face Northern Europe in the winter..

KR, can you tell us the riders in the classic photo?
PS: note the "jamming tool" in 2's shorts. Following up a thread on body armor a few weeks ago: I rode shorts like this in hairier crits (without the tool, but the shorts have a double layer) for a bit of extra protection, back in the hairnet era.

Sure man.
That would be Jean-Pierre “Jempi” Monseré the 1970 World Road Racing Champion on the left. He was tragically killed in the spring of 1971 during a kermesse in Retie, Belgium. Often referred to as the James Dean of cycling, he is a cult figure in Belgium.
On the right you have the great Patrick Sercu. Who is still alive and kicking. Patrick Sercu won an insane 88, yes EIGHTY-EIGHT six day races over his career. Sercu won Six days from the 60's through the 80's. He won 15 Six days with Merckx and 14 with Peter Post, the Englishman.
Sercu and Monseré were both from the same town of Roeselare, Belgium. They won the Gent Six in 1970. I have little doubt that had Monseré lived, he and Sercu would have had a six day win tally in the double digits. They were just getting started. Monseré was only 22 when he died. There are photos of the wreck, but out of respect for his wife who is still alive, I don't post them.
Here is an article by Chris Sidwells on him.

No problem Huck. People spend too much time wanking off over doping. There are more important things going on in the cycling world, ya know?

Plenty of excitement but too bad we don't get to see Mark in the mix.

It is unfortunate that the track is seen as something distinct and apart from road racing. Back in the day all the stars rode on the track in the fall/winter. It is holding back track events in terms of popularity.

True that. Best DS ever.
