Tomorrow's Worst Day of the Year ride is canceled because what it celebrates happened. There is 6-8 inches on the ground now with lots of drifting. It is still snowing and the prediction are for it turning to freezing rain up to a 1/4" in places. Given that Portland doesn't plow, a wise choice.
Too bad. It's a benefit for a bike shop that does a lot of good for the community. The ride gets 20,000 riders paying $30+ each. We haven't lost our money. An E-mail informed us we are prepaid for next year!

Sunday morning: 23 degrees, light wind and crust! Freezing rain has happened off and on since yesterday afternoon. I went for a walk yesterday. Main streets were sorta plowed and I watched a MTBer doing just fine, but the bike lanes were completely unrideable (tractor tired Surleys only). Today I will mosey up to the local Starbucks just to get out.
The Worst Day could have happened, physically, but the cost (broken bones, etc.) would exceed the take. And the 42 mile long route that I have always ridden would be epic. 1500 feet of climbing on little traveled roads and a 700 foot descent down Germantown Road. Sounds like another 18 months of hip bursitis, and $60 of business at Mountain Sole to get tights and jacket repaired to useable. (Oh, and I would have to borrow that 25 yo body I parted with several decades ago just to make it.)

I look at your post and I think I am off by a digit. 2,000? Just did a search. They limit the registration at 4,000. (I never see the whole crowd as I have always done the early start/long route with several hundred others. But on the return, we see volunteers who have had a LONG day!

aside from the lost charity, it appears the universe is working at planned.
