OMG that is some classic $4it. neon kit, purple anodized bits, bell V1 Pro's, rim brakes, and back when Pamela Anderson was young.

I remember seeing Tomac a few times at the Grundig WC at Mt St. Anne back around that time. you could here that Tioga Disk Drive coming through the trees before you ever saw him. thems were the days riders would do the uphill TT, then the downhill on one day, and XC the next, all on the same bike.

jacques, you forgot trials. Most weekends around here went: XC Sat morning, hill climb Sat afternoon, DH Sunday late morning, trials afternoon. In between all of that was a fun festival of activities, food, and drink. Once DH required a different bike a lot of guys quit doing all of the events. Trials quickly disappeared at most races except for nats. I tired to do the Johnny T. for a while and race XC and DH, but the reason I started racing bikes was because I quit racing moto cross due to injuries. DH was putting me in the same situation. Plus, I was broke so keeping the downhill rig rolling was too spendy. Tons of great memories from those days though!

Yes, that disc was crazy noisy!

oh cr@p am I old......I remember that segment!!! Tomac was always the guy as far as I was concerned. Guy was just so good at everything....

Those Tioga discs were crazy....never understood his fascination with them (other than sponsorship ). BUt yeah, the noise was unmistakable.

I may have to dig out my old VHS of Tread tonight, just for schitts and giggles.

I remember watching Tomac race at Mt. Snow. One year I think he won all three -- hill climb, down hill & XC. Didn't he win the nationals in the crit too?

Sounds to me like there should be an MTB "omnium" of uphill TT, XC, Downhill and Trial, all on the same bike. The events and parcourse are there. Just need to add another category.

Just an idea gro a guy who will probably never own a mountain bike.

Ben, There is something very close to what you envision now, called Enduro.

Poll: when did you ride your first mountain bike, and what was it? 1981, Univega.

Every bike shop used to sell those Bell feather stickers for the lid, too. total rip-off from the other man himself - Mr. Daytona

He rode the drop bars because 7-11 / Motorola were concerned that riding a MTB position would screw up his body for road racing. In hindsight, it was complete lunacy. The fact that he was successful despite the drop bars is a testament to just how good he really was..

I remember reading somewhere a long time ago that of all pro cyclists (mtb or road), Tomac had the best and smoothest pedaling technique. Back when I had a house with a garage, I had a poster of him and Frischy dueling at Houffalize, both of them covered in mud and grimacing in pain. Great interval motivator.

IIRC, those tioga discs were rated for something crazy like 40 or 50 hours of riding time, then had to be retired, lest they grenaded on some downhill bumpy section

lsd, '86 Ross. Before that we would ride our BMX bikes on logging roads and skid trails to gain fitness for moto racing. I could really fly down hill on the Ross because the brakes were so poor that they didn't really do much!

Johnny T was the man. I had a front row seat of him battling with Ned once, and Tinker once. Tomac's bike handling was amazing. He did some of the development for STI while he used drops bars off road. His kid is a top AMA moto guy now so he passed some of that feel on to his offspring.

I thought he rode the road bars and used he disc wheel because he had been reading your posts and knew it was all about aero!
