zoot, it seems to me that many of the early TdF were won by hours.
EDIT: (from Wiki so subject to being wrong)
1903- 2hrs 59 min
1904- 2 hrs 16 min
1919- 1 hr 42 min
1926- 1 hr 22 min
1927- 1 hr 48 min
1939- 30 min
I might have missed a few because that was a quick skim
I remember reading an interview with one of the racers from the 20s or 30s, and he said they used to give each other a bad time if someone finished after dark.
