The one for the Haute Route that is. The doc seemed worried even though the checks of pipes and pressures she did were all fine; kinda like isn't that a stupid idea to suffer like a dog for a week? You ride up Mt Seymour by yourself, isn't that dangerous, what if you crap out?!?  (she didn't say that last part but it was implied; I told her the bears would find me).

Anyway, gotta get some blood chemistry work done and an echocardiogram before she'll sign on the dotted line. That way at least we'll know everything is still working as it should.

Damn Russian lady, she clearly doesn't understand us cyclists, but I still love her in a strange kind of way.

My doctor asked me for advice last year before he did his first Whistler Granfondo. Next visit I asked him how it went and his eyes lit up. He really enjoyed it. He's always been very supportive of my riding.

Allright, 2nd times a charm, I got the medical waiver form signed after chemistry work turned out looking good.

Another funny visit. before she finally signed the form I got the 3rd degree on nutrition, altitude sickness and was asked if I wanted painkillers. I declined but did however forget to ask where she kept her stash of EPO.

There was a medial student present who took notes; then he got to check my blood pressure but couldn't figure out how to work it. He's only two months into his studies but I sure hope he's not in line to replace my doc. I figure he must be first line of defense in case someone with Ebola or the flu walks in; can't get the expensive doctor sick.

The echocardiogram will have to wait till Jan 29; long live the medical lineups.

With paperwork done, now all that's left is to train. Route should be announced sometime this month.

Suggestion: ask about/read about acetazolamide. For me it helps me sleep at high altitudes.

Thanks LSD but I'll note I slept like a baby during last year's 5-day bike trip in Colorado, much higher in altitude. Not having to share a bed with a spouse really helps :-)

On occasion though I will suffer from a bit of insomnia after a really hard effort because the adrelanine from ride just keeps rushing. Does it help with that?

Sorry, I should have been more clear. It's used primarily for acclimitization to altitude, before and first part during.

echocardiogram? what's up with your heart? I saw that word and my mind lit up!!
My heart is rock solid these days, 7 plus years since the widowmaker, feel stronger than I ever have on the bike

Nothing's wrong Gonzo, just a doc going a little overboard on checks for the ride :-)

ah ha, good to hear, that just freaked me out, they use that to judge your ejection fraction, it's like a doppler radar of your heart, after my heart attack, my ejection fraction was below 20%, they said the average sedentary person who does nothing is around 60%
