Rental shoppe? I arrive with measures in hand and have them do adjusting. Puts responsibility where it needs to be. They also put on my pedals, seat etc. Easy as cake. |

Can't speak to the specifics of spacers vs. compression system, Ben.....except to note that spacer were deemed sufficient for more than a few years. Dunno if it is a redundant safety system now, or just a true realization that it was a significantly safer system.

Putting people on rental bikes is a lesson in patience................ OC, your the guy we liked in the shop, came prepared, or even e-mailed us his measurements, and we had everything ready. Loved the guy that said, "Close enough, It's only for a couple of hours" The guy you did not like was the impatient dude, waiting at your door an hour before you open, then has a laundry list of adjustments, and about two minutes into things, he says, "What is taking so long?" The east coasters were a little impatient, but that was understandable, they came out here, to the land of Manana, and we did not open up until 9 or 10, so they would freak out because they body clock is telling them it's noon already! I used to think I was an amateur mechanic at best, until I went to work in a shop, and realized I was as good as any mechanic out there
the spacer thing has something to do with Carbon Steerer tubes, it has more integrity with a spacer above the stem

Well, I'll dig up this oldie but goodie too! LOL. I was in REI, and overheard a woman specifically ask for help in buying a bike helmet, admitting her ignorance. She then proceeded to snap at the guy every time he instructed her on how to adjust the helmet. Ah, retail. When I worked in bike shops, I think my favorite was folks who used quick release skewers like "wing nuts" and just cranked them until they were tight instead of closing them. This my friends, is why we all have to have those annoying tabs on our fork dropouts. N |

One thing is for sure, I've learned my lesson on renting bikes! I should have told them the measurements and have the bike completely set-up upon my arrival. Guess I was just trying to make it easy for them as I figured I could dial in the fit as needed. Oh, and definitely bringing my own saddle next time! I haven't had saddle sores like that in years. Are they seriously selling road bikes now with leather-covered 2'x4's? |
