Rode for the first time in 3.5 weeks today, since I was laid flat by an unleashed dog. It ran out from between some parked cars. Didn't see me and I didn't see it. I feel lucky though because I didn't break a collarbone or hip or get a nasty concussion. Just 6 broken ribs and a bruised shoulder .Amazingly, the only scratches on the bike are on the very tips of the brifters. It must have somersaulted and flopped over in the grass or something. I didn't move, it felt like my shoulder was totally broken and didn't have a chance to look around. Just waited for the ambulance.

All is feeling pretty good now. At first it felt like I would never be the same again. And the recovery period always feels indefinite. Seems like there's something every couple of years, some unforeseen incident that makes you question why you do this stuff. And lots of deja vu when you feel the same pains time and again.

Anyway, here's to hoping for another few years without a fall.

6 ribs! Ouch. I put ribs a lot higher on the pain scale them collarbones. I've done each collarbone twice. Half those have been associated with ribs. Go easy on them and they heal up just fine most of the time. But ribs? It's really hard to both go easy on them and breath. And deep breaths are so related to proper oxygenation and healing.

Glad to hear you are back. Hope the dog owner was reprimanded in some meaningful way.

Yike! I fractured 5 ribs in 2000 (my first bad crash of many). My doc would not let me ride for 8 weeks. My last crash was caused by a dog in 2011. I fractured my left elbow after I t-boned him. Dogs are fast and they don't always bark.Needless to say the whole ordeal left me dog tired, woof!!

Wow - surprised you're on the bike already. Heal well and quickly.

Only time I broke anything (a rib) was black ice. Most of the time I fall very well.

But I have been limping for two weeks now. Been having a tight left leg for months from too much training. Then 3wks ago my daugher chasing me in water it completely and violently cramped up, hamstring and calf at same time, causing some pretty good muscle damage I reckon from the pain level that's still there now. Fell to ground and had to retreat to car on one leg. Cramps in hamstring keep returning even though I stretch all the time and use the dough roller. Calf still hurts like hell. I set myself back to square 1 last weekend tripping over 1 inch high railing separating track and field from soccer pitch, that must have looked funny but hurt badly. Slowly on the mend and fortunately it doesn't affect riding. Just that limping through the office is annoying. And I still can't kick a soccer ball.

Get better.....luckily the bike as OK. Remember the old racer's credo - Bones heal, Campag (or Shimano) doesn't.
Just say "NO!" to WCP!!!!

Yowza. Sounds like you took one for your bike. Maybe that's backwards?
Glad you are coming back.

Glad you are getting better. I hope it continues smoothly.

You too OC, you must be glad that didn't happen before the HR.
