If the field is small enough and the payout deep enough even a mid-pack old guy like me gets a check. $50.00 for 5th place (field of 9 in the 60+ category)

They started the 40+ 50+ and 60+ at one minute intervals. I got pulled on the final lap about a minute before Tildord (50+) would have flown past but I'm still claiming he did't lap me

Fun day racing in Tulsa and they paid crazy money! Between the five of us hanging out in our team tent we ended up with over $2,500.00

For those of you keeping score, no I did not pull my weight

With a 15k purse definitely lost money on this event. Promotor was the same one that puts on Tulsa Tough and I think they want to grow this to be the cross equivalent of the road race/ crit.

Nicely Done Dale!! $50.00 pays for the beer!!

My only recent claim to fame was getting passed by Ned Overend in a cross race  in Durango in about 4" of snow, but Ned was on a fat bike!! ha ha ha, I think I was 15th, Ned was like 5th?

Well done! By the way, Steve Tilford, has a good report of the race on his blog.

Gonzo, I got smoked by Ned at National in Kansas City the first year I started racing cross. He went past me like I was standing still... which I nearly was. He was a freaking mile ahead of 2nd place.

Maybe we can make an "I got lapped in a major US cross race" club.

I got lapped in the 82 cross nats.
Very little cross experience, no dedicated bike. Cyclocross was so minor in the US then that the nationals were an open event. So I got a number and started on the back row, where I belonged.
I sucked, and it wasn't the bike. Got lapped by some quality riders: Roy Knickman (who at the time was billed as "the next Greg LeMond" . . . well maybe not, but he did have a decent pro career), defending chap Natwick and Steve Tilford, and some other quality riders, and some lesser lights too. No 50 bucks for me, but I did get a cool t-shirt.

lsd, did you cross paths with Paul Curley in your cross endevours? (He was out of Boston, was racing cross when we worked together in '77 and is still racing. I'm guessing he probably did the seniors Nats a few times but that was the day when cross wasn't news nor was I close to racing.

Paul wasn't the nicest guy in a race, but he had real talent and instinct.

Ben, Curley was at a couple of races I did prior to the Nationals in Austin. He runs a rear disc wheel and is still a beast. He pretty much smeared me and the group I run with.

Raced against Curley on the road. He was good!

Awesome! I once won $20 for like 17th place in a III/IV criterium as a junior. I don't even know how the hell they could keep it straight that deep?!

I also have a third place plaque for a car race, third place for my class. There were four in our group, and one ran out of gas!!

But seriously, Steve Tilford is a freak of nature (in the best way!). Even "almost" getting lapped by him is a hell of an achievement.

Dale, Oh yeah, when Ned passed me, I thought I was going backwards, I have no idea how I was even in front of him. In 96' he set the pace on the King of the Mtn Climb on the Sandia's in Albq. NM. I won my age group, placed 5th overall, but I was 9 minutes off his pace!!

Steve Tilford is a stud, total freak of nature
