My first goal is to make it through the year without crashing and ending up in the hospital (been there twice). My second is a mileage goal, I shoot for 5,000 miles. Way down from my younger years when I was putting in 7,000 (sigh). But not too bad for an old 75 year old dude (pat on the back for myself). Riding should just be fun and enjoyable. Sometimes it is not too much fun, but there is always tomorrow...

The first 6 months of 2018 are not going to yield many miles on the bike. In the process of a complete demo except for two walls at our new place up the road a few miles. Pretty much building a new house. Damn hurricanes have driven the price of wood up, like no ones business. I'll post pics of the progress as soon as we start.

My goal is to stay healthy. See what Cycle Oregon has to offer.

I've been quiet on this thread because that first has been looking dubious. I have been roofing, not riding. Started riding a little two weeks ago. Last week I finished an easy 25mile ride and saw swelling about my left sock. Than watching it build slowly with a mild discomfort that got worse as the day went on. Better with my leg up or compression socks. Sunday I went out to see music and got up to what felt like a hamstring tear. Monday morning I Emailed my doc with the symptoms and scheduled an appointment this afternoon with her cohort.

Got a call from my doc a couple hours later. "Get yourself to the ER. It could be a blood clot and it could travel to your lungs." I went. Ultrasound. Baker's cyst. Went to my appointment. "Do therapy - ride. You know the rest."

So I don't know what I am riding. Just that I am. Quite literally, doctor's orders.

Oh jeez....as I was reading your post I was thinking Dale and I had another member in the VN DVT Club.

Glad to hear it wasn’t a clot, Ben!
Just say "NO!" to WCP!!!!

My doc called and said clot and I got thinking. I bone bruised my shins a bunch of times that first week of roofing when I was pulling the old sheathing and replacing. Really easy to misstep between rafters. And my focus was on three thing. Getting the roof watertight and windproof in seven days because I was flying east. Not falling off the roof. Finishing the job with all ten fingers. I paid little attention to anything else. So i got thinking: did I damage anything leading to clots in one of those missteps? Could I have incubated it on my plane rides? (Flying out, I missed my flight and ended up going to Boston via St Louis and Tampa. Coming home, thunderstorms hit Chicago and we detoured to Cincinnati to refuel and wait.)

Went to the ER and waited. I had no visible blood, so the usual slow service. (Want quick attention? A shallow cut on your face will accomplish a lot.) I did have those instructions to speak up quickly if I felt any shortness of breath, so not being vigilant was hard. Felt a twinge in my heart. Attention! How are my other vitals? Breathing accelerates, I feel flushed, my forehead is warm, my hands start sweating, then become clammy. Time to act! Go to the desk and say what's going on. Well that dropped my waiting time from hours to about a minute.

Off to a small room. (A little too small, it was pressed into service because Portland is down with the flu. My bed made it though the door a little easier than removing cranks but not much.) Shed my clothes and donned that sexy dress. Got wheeled to ultrasound. About midway through I started worrying less. The technician wouldn't give me any hints about what she was finding, but got more relaxed as the scan went along. (And she was happy to show me the scan - but nothing important. Pretty amazing technology.)

So quite a scare, all brewed up in my imagination except that little twinge (which I have been ignoring almost completely but has been happening every once in a while for decades and isn't all that different from twinges I get in a lot of less significant muscles).

The "blood clot" was just a routine Baker's cyst and the remedy is to ride the bike! Now I get to see what that info costs me going to a preferred provider hospital.

I could have skipped all this by just riding my bike but my house is glad I didn't.  (It sounds like the cyst probably wouldn't have happened if I just stayed riding.)

No kidding, glad you're not a member of our club.

I manage my disorder with a daily dose of anti-coagulant (aka rat poison) but I'm now susceptible to more clots, excessive bleeding, and other complications if I smack my head against the ground.

Happy to hear your medicine is bike riding.

Just pulled up my Strava account and since I don't alway have my garmin on when I ride it's a bit short but I'm surprised to see I'll top 3,000 miles this year. That's double what I would have guessed.

I'll need to check to see how many of those were recorded with the bike on the rack coming back from a race five hours away
