Like a dang fool I ran with my wife yesterday and had leg cramps all night long... felt like I was getting shanked with a prison sharpened spoon handle. |

I don't run a lot. Actually, I don't run any more -- jogging is a euphemism. However, I find that after a run (jog) that if I ride the hated trainer for 10 minutes with low resistance, it helps to avoid cramps and muscle soreness. Also, keeping a good electrolyte balance helps with cramps. Na/K ratio is important, plus Mg levels. |

I rode a handful of times in February. Monday it did not rain. For the first time this year, sweat dripped onto my sunglasses. Around the two hour mark I started to bonk, slightly. Yesterday it hit 57o and I did not need a jacket. The sun popped out a couple of times. Spring is around the corner, but I don't think we are finished with the rain yet......Lord I hate winters.... |

Today I ran out of excuses. It was quasi light. It was dry. It was slightly above freezing. First bike commute of 2019. Form will start taking shape quickly from here. |

I learned a lesson about Zwift, and likely IRL riding... watts per kg is not very revenant on a flat course. Did a Zwift ride last night that was advertised as 2.5 - 3.1 w/Kg Watching the w/Kg of other riders I was almost always higher and dying to stay in the main field... but DID finish there, so there's that. Of the 16 that finished at the front I had the 2nd highest w/kg (3.1), 3rd lowest average watts, 4th lowest 15 second power, and was 3rd lightest rider. There were a couple of guys with 30% higher nominal power! Interestingly that when I did Alpe du Zwift my average power was 17 watts higher. I need to find rides with more elevation

On the flats it is all about pure watts....or if you want to get really technical, watts / CdA. W/KG is almost inconsequential. Also a friendly reminder that many people are weight / trainer / size cheating on Zwift... And a trainer simulation ain't real life...although Zwift is probably the best representation out there. When I ride at our training center, I get my ass handed to me by the watt monsters. I simply can't keep up (especially on the "downhills")....but I always put the screws to those guys IRL when it warms up and we get outside. Over the years, one of those watt monsters I only "rode" with on the trainers...had never done an outdoor ride with him. Did more than a few with him last summer and he came up to me at one point and said "I had no idea you were this strong...". I took great satisfaction from that comment!!

Oh, I know cheating at Zwift is as common as it is in pro cycling or college entrance I crack up at the guys who go out and ride at a steady pace for hours at a time, they get popped as soon as the surges begin and wonder why the scrawny old guys don't get blown out the back with them. umm... cuz we do intervals til we puke and know how to ride tactically; which technically speaking means wheel sucking.

I'm the steady pace guy. Easy to drop but hard to completely get rid of. And after a sufficient number of hours in the saddle I may start putting in some digs myself. Some of my club mates are still grumbling about the sneak attack I put in during Hellracer250 in 2016 just as they were filling up their water bottles; went away at km 150 and by km 210 I had 15 minutes on them over the 60 kms of climbing and undulating course. This was after I was solidly back of pack for first 150k struggling in the heat and forest fire smoke. Once I hit the fresh climate in alpine, there was no looking back. That was a 15hr ride day; those are the best. |

So the rain passed and we just had wet roads this AM....about 8 of us got out. Strong wind out of the south. Me and a few others always head south to meet everyone else, then flip around and do the route with everyone (recatangle route...North, East, South, West. Mostly just North & South though). A fine gentlemen's pace head north with the tailwind...bit of a slog heading back south into the headwind and not everyone was ready for that much work. Did more than my fair share, just glad to be outside. Easy spin back north with the wind..... SO nice to get back out on the roads and ride with the crew again!!! |

Second commuting day in a row. Tired from yesterday's. One more tomorrow and we'll have a free 150k for week in bag. Add to that a Sunday training ride and finally looking at some descent weekly kms. Ran out of excuses not to commute. It was light, it was dry, it was above freezing. Dang. |
