Got my grandson on a bike. Huge accomplishment!

He turns 13 this Saturday. Super sweet boy that loves classical music, adored by his little brother and sister. Diagnosed with some developmental issues that make small motor skills a struggle. Slow speech, not athletic due to what is essentially short circuited nerves. My wife and I got a new tandem and I delivered the old one to my daughter and her husband. The idea was to get my grandson on the tandem so he can enjoy cycling with the rest of them. The 4 year old is on a trail-a-bike or whatever they're called that hooks on the seat post. The 8 year old rides his own bike so that left out the oldest as he lacks the coordination to ride solo. Anyway, I took him out on the tandem for a short spin around the block. Later my daughter took him on a bike trail for a four or five mile ride. Huge smile... both on him and his mom. That was a memorable day for all of us. It's going to be a game changer for him, for them. Just wanted to share my happy news

Dale, I was the kid who got teased. The bike was my escape. I was poor in sports (at a school where I had to play) but I could ride. Your story just reminded me of cross-racer Katie Compton's long time track tandem partner, a gifted, strong rider who could barely see. With Katie as pilot, she got to win a lot. Thanks for the heartwarming story. And on sorta similar lines, I learned that an autistic young man had played drums for marching band in high school. liked playing rock and roll and had an electronic drum set. I coaxed him into coming to a music jam I was a regular at, told the bass player/jam organizer about him and eventually, the bass player talked him into signing up to play. Coached him through the songs and rhythms he didn't know Well that jam ended so we moved to a blues jam across town. The house drummer came to our table one evening and said he knew of another drummer who taught. This young man has been taking lessons now two years, is getting seriously good and plays every Sunday night at a blues jam with some of Portland's best. Comes alive when he goes up on stage. It blows me away regularly. Ben
