There are no words. Bet that text message was awfully important because it's a near certainty that's the root cause.
It's high time texting while driving or dicking around with your phone needs to be criminalized at the same severity as drunk driving. There needs to be a national campaign that demonizes people in their community that are caught. Won't stop it from happening as evident with drunk driving but would at least make people think twice before risking the lives of others in order to see the latest Tweet.

That's just awful. Either the driver fell asleep or he got distracted by his phone, the other plague of our times. Riding on a straight, wide road on a wide shoulder, with a sag vehicle and they still got hit. smh.

Devastating. Distracted driving is a real problem. They have "hands free options". But there are so many variations. Are you using your phone for GPS, and not texting? Is it in your hand? Is it in a holder. Or are you messing with a built in touch screen in your vehicle? There needs to be a re-think of what's allowed. I'm sure automakers love the money they make on all of the high priced goodies in a vehicle. I was a kid when we were riding on a shoulder that was almost as wide as a lane, and heard tires squealing as a car slammed on the brakes...behind us!

I just read the driver of the truck was charged with DUI. Meth and amphetamine was found in his blood.

Zoot, I saw that too.
Almost 20 years ago I was riding on Old Highway 47, the original two lane somewhat windy (and nowhere leveled) road just east of the coast range. Next day's news, a couple riding their bikes on the full lane width shoulder of the new Highway 47 were killed by an inattentive driver at the same time.
Any time I ride in or out of town I can take the old, narrow, windy roads r the wide 2 lane + bike lanes arterial that runs on the old electric railroad right of way. Coming home, I always take the old road. Those drivers pay attention. I have far less faith of that on the arterial. (Going in, the hill up the old road is too soon and too hard. I'm getting too old.)

Here in VA it is just now illegal to hold a phone while driving. Not illegal to take your eyes off the road to push buttons on a dash mounted phone. So like drunk drivers, but less drunk. On two wheels I feel safer on a moto in busy places because I am moving with traffic, crazy as that may sound. Another vote for gravel and mtb when pedaling.

Reported this AM that the driver had meth in his system...
brutal reminder that we are all so vulnerable and exposed out there.
Just say "NO!" to WCP!!!!
