My right foot has been hurting for about a year. I saw an orthopod in the fall, but that didn't help. I found a podiatrist a month ago -- what a difference. After x-rays and an MRI, he found latent stress fractures and tendon tears. Now I need a CAM boot. When I saw him today, I brought my cycling shoes. He said I can still ride, but no hills. Rail trails here I come.

Keep an eye out for any calf soreness, inflammation, etc. That was how my blood clot started in 2009....8 weeks in a boot that I had reefed down really tight.

An unlikely development, but at our advanced ages, some thing to be mindful of.

Glad the podiatrist found the root cause of your pain....you should be good to go once you finish the treatment!

And here I thought this was going to be about the director’s cut now available on Netflix.

15 miles flat today. The rail trail has a 15 mph speed limit. I mostly adhered.

Good for you! Those comeback rides are sobering. It's great to finally get out but it's tough seeing what we've lost. Keep it up but listen to your body. Be willing to do (or more likely, not do) what it says. Be patient. And celebrate the little stuff. The sky, the other people on the trail, that you did "this" many miles and "that" doesn't hurt.

Most important - be ready and willing to laugh. Even if it is about having to go that slow!

I am getting so sick of the Heritage Trail -- the paved portion of the old Erie RR rail bed in Orange County, NY (not CA, FL, VT, or any of the other OCs). I'll see the podiatrist later this week, and maybe he'll let me back riding up hills, even if only gentle ones. The pain in the foot is greatly reduced.
Avoiding steep hills would still mean driving somewhere with the bike since I live near the top of a hill. It's easy to hit 45 mph a mile from leaving home, but quite slower coming back up, and no other route.

I live on top of a hill as well. Have about a dozen different roads to choose from to get home but they all share the same characteristic of about 2 kms uphill. Some are very steep at bottom and then more gradual near top, some are more even grade. The easiest one is actually gravel going through Glenbrooke Canyon but it ends w pedestrian aimed tight switchbacks.

Happy to hear you're getting closer to doing real bike stuff. It stinks to have to go easy when the mind says GO GO GO!
