He lives out in a rural county 25 miles from here and there’s not many near him that ride so he goes out solo. Good shape, mid 50’s, retired firefighter. Zero group riding experience.

“Dale, I’ve been riding a LOT lately; 50 miles a week! I’d like to try racing. Are there any races that are like a 5k run for bikes? I’ve got Strava and track all my rides. Usually 12 or 13 mph and I might be able to do 14 or even 15!”

I steered him away from the local club race where the average speed is 23+, not to mention the surges designed to blow people out the back. Told him about some of the beginner/ casual rides where he can pick up some pack and drafting skills.

I did not, as was sarcastically suggested, encourage him to race guys in his age group, you know, like Masters 45+

Time trial might be a good starter event

A time trial would be a very sobering wake-up call but I suspect he'd survive without injury to more than his ego.

Well done. I have ridden a lot of years and miles. But I never thought of trying racing. Just not my strength. I tried once to keep up with Lon Hadelman in a club ride almost 50 years ago and that did not go well. But me in my place.

OTOH maybe his speedometer is miscalibrated and he’s cruising at 24 mph. TT will sort it out

Lon Haldeman... yeah. Was the club ride 400 miles that day?

400 LOL. Not close, but he rode 80 miles from home to get there and I think he rode thru Wisconsin on the way home. I'm sure he got close to that amount before dinner.
