I didn't want to hijack the Armstrong thread but jrt brought up a good point about doping methods. If done correctly, blood doping is very safe. Most other methods are not very safe. All PES have health questions and issues both immediate and long term.

Safe doping??? Sounds like an oxymoron to me. If it's so safe, why is it banned?

It's banned primarily because it give an unfair advantage to the doper. If safety were the objective we wouldn't have three week long stage races. By week two those guys make anorexic supermodels look obese and the slightest germ overwhelms their overly taxed immune system.

madvax, blood transfusions are very safe if done correctly. IV fluids are banned now too but they are also very safe. I have often wondered why blood transfusions are banned. As Dale said, its not about safety. Somebody in power (maybe IOC) decided they didn't like it.
Why are certain types of plants legal to smoke while others are not? The big cig companies didn't like the mj producers getting in on their profits so they used their political power to make mj illegal.

Hopping aboard a train to get an unfair advantage is safe as well, but it violates the rules.
If you allow doping, it means everyone in the peloton will be forced to do blood transfusions. And what happens if there is a mix-up with the blood or labeling, or it is handled improperly (starts to thaw, etc.), or any number of things that could cause contamination? The riders life is at risk and relies on the skill of the handlers of the blood.
Sorry, but I do not agree that doping should be legal. Although a blood transfusion may be a simple procedure in the hospital, I can imagine how difficult the logistics would be for keeping the blood supply safe in something as chaotic as the TdF.

WOOOOH Nelly! I didn't say that it should be legal, I said that if done correctly it is safe.
Remember, the IOC oversees all Oly sports. I bet Nordic skiers were the subjects on that one not cyclists.
"What happens if there is a mix up/contamination?" Ask Tyler H!

crap like this is way more dangerous

I think there's another new one that allows your heart to become enlarged. as dangerous and spotty (ethically) roids, epo, speed are, the new stuff is certainly a hotter hot sauce. As long as there are rules and technology - someone's going to push the limit. As soon as the doping authorities figure how to test for one, all but the truly stupid have moved on to the next short cut. Short of cancelling the tour for a few years, there isn't much to slow this down. Tragic

jmdirt, in an event like the Tour, where buses get stuck under gantries, what could possibly go wrong?
