In awe of my Dura Ace 7700

12 years old 9 speed gruppo on my first serious road bike -- TREK 5500 -- yes i was inspired by you know who -- Still the bike sits out at parents beach house and i ride it maybe 10 days every summer. Clean the hell out of the chain/cogs/RD/FD and brakes. the friggin thing is like butta! clicks off shifts without a hitch and still has a wonderfully springy feel to the brifters which I have never maintained or lubed. Did change all cables a couple years ago. The group rides better than my 2year old Campy super record. By a wide margin. Dayem!!!

We have some products at work that our customers have had for 20+ years that they love. We can't give away the new stuff for free and have them take them.

Honestly it's true. We showed several of them that the energy efficiency payback period was less than a year if they would use the new stuff. They love the old stuff so much and it's working they just can't seem to part with it.

I applaud them and you. Old stuff that is in working order should continued to be used. It is the single most environmentally conscious thing we can all do. It saves a ton of resources.

The 7700 stuff was my favorite DA. Loved the shape of the hoods and it performed flawlessly.

Only downside to it was the crappy BB w/ the needle bearings. Would give out very quickly, especially if you rode it in the rain. Had to swap it out for a sealed Ultegra version.

XTR of that era was the same - wonderful group but use the XT bottom bracket.

best road group ever IMHO. plus one on the BB, CK

Campy (not Campag ) from this period is usually pretty solid too

Not surprised it works like a champ, the stuff was engineered to last and actually work for a period of time. SRAM should take notes and develop a tragic case of poor self esteem over this sort of thing - probably get out of the bike biz too as a result of not being able to perform for any length of time

I just retired my circa-2000 first-gen 10v carbon CAMPAG Record brifters. And the only reason is because my bike fell off the roof of my car and smashed the right lever.

Never even rebuilt them in all that time (although they may have needed it the last year or two. )

Funny about the BB. I rode this bike in the Etape in 2004 and swapped out the BB and chainrings for a FSA compact when it was the only option out there. Since went back to 53/39 but kept the FSA BB. In any event -- question for Shimano users -- is the more current gear as good as my 7700 in terms of quality and shifting? 7900 and above?

I wasn't a fan of the 7900 stuff....mostly because I thought the lever shape and finish was embarrassingly bad. God-awful.

While I haven't used it yet, everyone I talk to about the 9000 stuff raves about it. Superb performance across the board....including the front shifting. The only problem is that it is 11spd.....which, of course, is stoopid.
