Figured I'd post this here so that we can get some threads active. Trying to add up bike weight in Excel. It's pretty easy to get the actual weights for components, but it's all the other little stuff that has me perplexed. Bar tape, cables, bottle cage bolts, etc. Anyone have any thoughts?

My thought - is it even worth it? What percentage of total bike weight are these (maybe 2 to 5%?). What is the variation between various items? If the variation is slight, then mid-range figures should be suitable. Changing to different tires or a different saddle might outweigh the total variation of all these little things. Of course the lighter the overall bike the higher the percentage weight of these small parts.

Short of taking everything off and weighing it....

Some stuff could be taken off and weighed easily enough but... bar tape? Well probably don't want to do that but you could weigh it the next time you replace it. Or you could weigh the bike, subtract the weight of what you know and classify everything else as "other".

But I have to agree with C2K: how relevant/useful is this information? I mean how much of a difference would it make to get a new bottle cage because it weighs half of the old one?

Allow me to complicate it even further for you, 6ix......what size bike are you talking about? helluva lot more cable on a 60cm bike than a 52cm.

Back in my younger PM days, we had to call out specific cable / housing lengths for each specific bike size. That is a whole lot of measuring.....gawd, I hated that.

I would recommend just getting a length of cable (1ft?) and weighing it. Then extrapolate as necessary. Same w/ housing, etc. Bar tape can be easily weighed by itself.

Most bike companies do not include all the little widgets (WB bolts, BB cable carriers, FD braze-ons, seat collars, etc) when publishing frame weights, etc.

Ah crap, I didn't even think about the variation due to different frame sizes.

I don't need this information for my own bike. I'm not a gram-counter. However, I'm trying to "virtually" put together some example builds for my job and need to know what the weights would be for the complete bike.

I'll have to grab that stuff at the shop, weigh it, and see what it comes out to
