I remember this case....took 7 years for justice to be served, but this jacka$$ is thankfully going to prison.

The killer quote from the judge
Los Angeles County Superior Court Judge Scott T. Millington called the case a "wake-up call" to motorists and cyclists and urged local government to provide riders with more bike lanes. He said he believed that Thompson had shown a lack of remorse during the case and that the victims were particularly vulnerable while riding their bicycles.

Good on the conviction but the judge should have stayed out of the bike safety argument. Its a simple case of a guy slamming on his brakes with intent. Sure we need more bike lanes but not gonna happen on the particular road which is narrow to begin with. People simply need to learn to share the road.

Last week we had a drunk driver veer into opposite lane on a mountain road killing two cyclists as well as his passenger. There was an immediate tendency to turn this into a bike safety case which is completely wrong. Put a car where the cyclists were and it would have been a head-on collision with deadly consequences.

bike infrastructure is expensive. driver/rider courteousness is free.
How we spend our days is, of course, how we spend our lives.

I remember this case. I think it was an ongoing altercation between the cyclists and the driver. Not worth flipping any one off and making any remarks in this day and age. Lots of nuts out there...

I just realized that this article was from 2010, so not certain why it was posted today over on ST. The jacka$$ is question is undoubtedly back out on the street today.

@OC - I agree with your thoughts re: framing the issue in terms of bike safety, but absolutely agree with the judge re: it being a 'wake up call" and the emphasis on the vulnerability of cyclists.

Here's the latest I could find...

I imagine he is out now, but hopefully he served a good percentage of the time given.

CK - that's your second strike in posting a hopelessly dated article. You know what they say about the strikes... :-P
