Nice!!! That is like a 18.4 avg? That looks like either a Salsa Beargrease, or a Carbon Spez, which could be in the 22 to 23lb range, some even lighter with the new HED fat wheels I have my Beargrease down to 22lbs looks like he has like 50psi in the tires, plus these things can roll amazingly quick, and the Salsa and Spez ride like a 29er, you can't even tell your on a fat bike until you look down.

Gonzo, it was the Salsa. Leaving aside the rolling resistance / weight issue, this guy was dusting decent riders on full tri bikes w/ aero wheels and (obviously) aero positions. Now, he also apprently suffered pretty good on the run, so he was burning more than a few matches out there on the bike course, but still.....damn impressive ride. and yeah, it was an 18.4 mph average! |

This reminds me...on one of the first Dutch national ironman championships there was a guy ending very short (top 10? I can't remember but he got a big page in national newspaper) who rode the course on a 3-speed upright bike with bananas in a basket. |

I was on the 2nd Sister and saw him well ahead of numerous Speed Concepts, etc.
Taht said, he also fell apart on the run....so while the bike split was beastly, he burned a lot of matches.
So no, it isn't really all about the engine.
You'll be glad to know that I signed up for the race next year already....back to the grind!! |

Just spectating....bunch of people I train with were doing the race, so went up there to support 'em. Two years? Nah....you can get there by next year. SIGN UP!!!! It may be a bit of a hike for you, but look into Amphibian MultiSport in Libertyvillle. 16 Computrainers, 25 yd pool and 4 treadmills all on site. Good group of people, too. |

Funk, i just have the drilled out Surley's, but, going tubeless is the key. The HED fat wheels are the lightest out there, but they are insanely expensive 22lbs, tubeless, with light rubber, carbon seat post, handle bar and stem, XT Brakes, carbon Race face crank, 1x11, Ti saddle, fully rigid, a shock would add about 1.5 to 2 lbs Looking at going steel though, something with a 66 or 67 head tube angle, love this bike, but is is almost too stiff at times, with a carbon bike, going with a Bluto shock makes total sense |
