Reminds me of climbing my first big hill on my daily ride after sharing a bottle of single malt scotch with my brother-in-law. Later came the part about getting stuck in a freaking rain storm after no rain was forecasted.

I almost lost my bike on last turn second time up Ventoux this summer. Climbing speed alternated between less than 7 and 30+ kph depending on which way the wind blew.

I think I told the story of the time I raced Mt. Evans (93).....top of the mountain gets hit by a storm. Huge wind, snow, sleet, the works (this is July 8, BTW).
Go past Summit lake and enter the final stretch with the switchbacks. Going around the right hand switchbacks, you would get a massive boost from the wind....until the next left hand switchback, when you would slow to a crawl. I saw 1.5 mph at one point on my Avocet (remember those?)....I didn't know I could ride that slow and stay upright.
After one of the left-handers, the wind gusted and knocked me off my bike. Get my foot out, but there was no way for me to get going again in the wind.....just then an official comes up on a moto, gets in front of me just long enough for me to remount and start pedaling and then zooms off once I was underway. Had he not stopped for me, I woulda had to walk to the next switchback.
Just say "NO!" to WCP!!!!

Ha CK - that kinda sounds like my Mt Evan's ride, also July, except I was lucky. Near summit lake I came acoss a whole bunch of freaked out cyclists heading down telling me to get off the mountain cause they were getting blown all over the place. Having flown in to do the ride I wasn't going to let a little weather stop me. Got lucky w half hour sunny window to summit and back down past summit lake. Double lucky cause w hail all I had was short sleeves. Then on way down all hell broke lose again, thunder, lightning, the works.
Dang, tried to link the Mt Evans - almost epic post from 2013 but all the photo links are kaput.
