Interesting you mention those crash details. My brother was out for a hard group ride in Oct/Nov about 2015 when they were approaching the finish, an uphill sprint. Dan was perfectly positioned in place when a driver, playing with his cell phone turned left into the group, killing two and seriously injuring three. Dan called me the next day to get rid of all his cycling gear. He recently got the bug again and bought a Peloton for his man cave. Meanwhile, the driver was not convicted of any crimes: https://www.cleveland19.com/story/31318467/not-guilty-brecksville-driver-acquitted-in-deadly-cyclists-crash/

Perhaps this is a morbid take on the topic but I'd like to pull a quote from Fight Club. "On a long enough timeline, the survival rate for everyone drops to zero." We've seen marathon runners drop dead from heart-attacks, seemingly supremely fit people. Or someone that has played it super safe, leading a safe and healthy life-style die naturally from a random aneurysm. My mom passed away that way a few hours after we finished Thanksgiving dinner.

My point being is that we shouldn't live in so much fear. I'm not a dare-devil and weigh the potential for failures and danger, but I'm going to keep riding on the road because that's what brings me joy. It gives me the endorphins I need to feel good and lead a healthy life. For me, it's living and it can't be replaced by Zwift or Peloton.

I crashed heavily a few years ago due to a strong crosswind coming off the Flatirons. It's taken me a while to get my nerves back on fast descents. I definitely don't "Redbull Games Bomb" down them any longer but I'm finally starting to let off the brakes a bit more.

And as for cars, I've heard the reverse about people using the Varia. It gives them constant anxiety as the thing is always beeping. Takes the pleasure away from riding. There needs to be some sort of in-between where you are notified of something that requires you to take action and not being notified of every object coming by. Not sure how that would work. Maybe a little handlebar-mounted LCD screen? That would be a novel idea.

But man, Hab, had no idea you went through that!! This distracted driving crap needs to stop. Part of it now is the result of these stupid touch-screens in cars that are horrible yet manufacturers love them because they can charge a premium yet they cost less to produce. Win-win for them, a loss for pedestrians. That's why small fender-bender crashes are going up every year. Distracted driving needs to have the same type of campaign that drunk driving has, where it's a social disgrace to be caught (in addition to illegal, of course.) Problem is everyone seems to do it as society is addicted to their little black boxes.
